Golfing 1 course better your game?

Recommended Posts

I trade index futures for a living, and what's gotten me to another level in my career has been focusing on one thing to trade. It allows me to focus in on things I wouldn't normally focus on if I had just been bouncing around into different equities or markets. I've learned that its not what you trade, but how you trade it. I'm beginning to think golf may be the same way. Granted I'm still new, but when recently playing 1 course more often then others I'm starting to learn things I wouldn't have thought of doing while bouncing around to different courses multiple times a week. I've began to focus in on club selection more, reading greens, distance..etc. I know the argument that going around to different courses is better because you're exposed to different conditions and your horizons are broadened, etc. But for me, Sticking to just one course could be what allows me to step my game up. Remember I'm still less than a year into the game and I'm constantly golfing new courses every week.

What do you guys think? Would playing one course make you better then playing multiple? Why or why not?

btw, done lurking and finally made an account!

Personally, I think a newer golfer would benefit from the same course or the same few courses for a while, until he feels confident about his swing and his game. But, after a while, this same regimen may hold him back from improving and I think that playing a wider range of courses is beneficial.

R11S 8* square; Stock stiff
Maltby KE4 14* 3w , Axe Excaliber R flex tipped 1"
RBZ 25* hb; RBZstage 2 19* hb
Mizuno MP30 5 - PW, AXE Excaliber stiff, Hogan Apex PC E Wedge (50*) TT DG s300
GM Never Compromise GM2 putter
54*, 58* TM TP wedges 3* flat

At our club we have 2 courses, but I've noticed I play worse at my home courses. I tend to try different things and work on things vs. going with what I know. But I do think this has helped my overall game. Playing the same courses really has helped me improve my game, but more importantly it helped me learn my game.

It's showed me where my main weaknesses are, what my standard miss is and it's helped my mental game.

I've broken 80 twice and both were on courses I was playing for the 1st time (Pronghorn Fazio and Tetherow).

My best scores have been on courses I played for the first time as well, I think that is more geared at the level of my focus when playing at new courses sometimes. But that's nice to hear that your home courses are where you learned more. Having something designated as your home course probably allows you to relax more and work on your game verse golfing somewhere new and focusing more on your score then learning.

for a relatively new golfer, I would also say playing the same course is better for game improvement. it's like to going to the range: the conditions are the same, allowing you to focus on one or two things. but as you improve, playing the same course may hurt you. you get too comfortable, know where to aim, where to miss, etc. your scores will be lower because of these factors. also depends on your course. if your home course is flat, no wind, then you'll never get to practice uneven lies, winding conditions, etc. You'll then be surprised when you play a hilly, windy course and can't hit anything or slice everything because of the wind.

Yes when starting out playing the same course can be helpful... you get to know your yardages, you get familiar with the layout so you can just concentrate on making a good swing. I do think after a while it can get stale though and switching it up is helpful.

Also good I think for a new player to play a course that isn't too difficult and/or frustrating. A wide-open course where you don't lose too many balls, forgiving rough, not too many bunkers, etc... helps make the game more fun and inspires confidence. A lot of new players probably start out on courses that are too difficult and get discouraged before they have a chance to get better.

I think alot of it also has to do with the course. Is it a tough course or just a wide open cow pasture that lets you play from anywhere? While i believe after a number of years a different course would test you differently and be able to help you improve other areas of your game. I think that the same course for a few years would be good for anyone.

Depends. I joined a club recently and I've found myself experimenting a lot more. 4 iron off the tee on shorter 4s, trying to hit a club less into par 3s to hold the green a bit more, more bump and runs, etc. I assume this will make me better than hitting driver and then whatever iron seems appropriate for the next shot. Boring.

I was told by my coach once,"The more I play, the luckier I get." Pretty sure this fits here. I would say join a club get a "home course" learn not only the course but how to give and take with her. When to push an when to play for par or bogie. It will make you a better golfer, but be sure to test your game at other places. It will give you knew things to work on at home.
