Getting fitted

how much of a difference does it make?
I'm thinking about getting my clubs fitted, but I don't think I have the money to do it. I also have a few questions

-For a set of 8 irons, how much would it cost, if you didn't have to get them reshafted?

-I have graphite shafts in my irons, is it still possible to get them cut down?

-How much of a difference did it make after you got fitted? I've been playing with clubs too long for me ever since I stated oplaying.

-How much would it cost if I did get them reshafted, with say, Treu Temper Ultralites or similar quality?

thank you

Not getting fitted for clubs is like going to a suit store and taking one of the rack without having it tailored. Generally speaking, the major OEMs like Titleist, Ping, Cleveland, Callaway, TM, etc. have fitting carts where you can hit different types of irons with different loft/lie/length/flex characteristics. Most larger off-course shops and some on-course shops offer this fitting service for FREE if you are buying clubs.

IMO, look around to see what you like (aesthetics are very important). Then visit the manufacterer's website to see if they have a fitting van or demo day in your area. If they do, make sure you go and get fitted.

If you are looking to get fitted on your current set, you can do one or both of the following:

1. Get a lie board - a piece of plexiglass will work. Put some masking tape on the sole of your clubs and hit some shots off the lie board. If the tape is "scarred" in the middle, then your lies are fine. If it's "scarred" on the heel, then your lies are too upright. If it's "scarrd" on the toe, then your lies are too flat.

As far as the length (and even the lie angle), you can use a system like the one Ping uses by taking a wrist to floor measurement and considering your height. It's pretty accurate and can be found at www.Pinggolf.com or on www.TGW.com under the custom fit section.

2. With regard to loft, you'll probably need more equipment such as a launch monitor to calculate backspin and sidespin. A launch monitor session is relatively inexpensive (approx. $30-50 per hour).

If you are reshafting a set, you can expect to pay about $10 per shaft for a Dynamic Gold PLUS installation charges which vary by market. Loft/Lie angle adjustments typically run a couple of bucks per club. So, to reshaft and adjust an entire set of 8 irons you might expect to pay $200 or more depending on where you are and who you know.

Good luck.

I believe you about half right, I'd say the cost is more like $400 for a set of irons to be adjusted and reshafted with your choice of shafts, and more if you get Proj X's, TC's or Nippons. :fool:

Nice call. After I posted, I realized I left off grip prices which are typically $5-9 per club, thus adding another $50-$80. And, yes, Rifles are definitely more expensive. I suppose I've been given preferential treatment at my local shop as they only charge me $10 per club for a re-shaft when I provide the shaft.

One thing I've been battling is deciding when to do fitting. My irons are 2 deg flat but I'm 6' tall. On the other hand, I have a somewhat flat one-plane swing and they seemed to be spec'ed alright.

I also hit irons with a normal lie and they were also "correct".

That was 4 years ago.

On the other hand, fitting your woods is extremely important. I believe that stiff-flex shafts are now too weak for me as my driver and 3 wood have become more and more inconsistent. Fitting your driver can give you literally 25 more yards.

However, I've been trying to increase my forearm rotation and make my swing less flat, as well as maintain my wrist c*ck for longer on the downswing. These things could very well change the lie angle required for my irons, but I doubt it will change my shaft flex requirement from X back to stiff.

Also, I discovered that I still need a 13 deg 3 wood after recently purchasing a 15 deg 904F. Time to hit up ebay I guess. It makes me wonder how Tiger can be using a 15 deg T-60.

So, while you can fit your clubs to your swing, you should make sure your swing is one worth being fit to :fool:

When I purchased my irons I was tossing back and forth about getting fitted. Problem is that my swing is still very much a work in progress. I didn't want to get fit for my swing today that might be radically different a month from now. I did get a static fit for the length, and my clubs only come in Uniflex, so the flex wasn't an issue.

For me, I am going to wait until my swing is consistent and I am ready for a new set of irons, probably in another few years. Then I'll do the full launch monitor and I'll probably get a set of Pings. From my understanding they are very ajustable and I could just tweak them for a few more years until I am ready for a full set forged blades that I can have made to order.

Thanks,

I have never been fitted for clubs before but that is my next step. This past year 2 of my golfing buddies got fitted with clubs when they went to Florida this spring. In past years I would play 3-4 shots lower than them. Well I droped 1 shot this year and those guys dropped 6 & 7 shots and thier killing me know. Nothing else changed in thier game, no lessons, nothing.

So if you ask me fitted clubs are the way to go.

I will have a set in my bag next spring for sure. Just my 2 cents worth

Is there a Golfsmith around you? If so- Clubvantage. For $99, you can have 3 years of free labor on 14 clubs you choose. Basically, they will check loft lie and adjust for free, install shafts, and grips for free. You just pay the membership fee, then the parts for whatever work you want done.

It pays for itself if you reshaft 4 irons (they charge $20 a club for labor on irons) or just regrip a couple of times in 3 years.

You can click through the Golfsmith banner here and help out the site if you decide to go that route.
