raise swingweight of "thriver"

been reading this site since last winter and have learned a lot. Great info guys. Built a thriver this summer and need to change swingweight. Nike sumo 2 5900 hl (16 deg), attas 7r shaft, crossline grip. Play length of 43.75 in to end of cap, D0 swingweight. I would like to get to @ D3-D4. From post by Howard Jones I will tip shaft 1/2 inch, so length will end up 43.25. I estimate I will need to add approximately 12-14 grams weight. Can i do this with a 6gr tip weight and cotton balls in head or should it be done by hot melt in head only or some other combination.---Thanks in advance for help, first post. About me; 60 yr old, been playing 6 years. controllable 94mph driver, started year hc index 21.3--ended year 16.1 index

I use an old G2 15.5 400cc driver with a 65g Accra shaft at 43" as a thriver for three (four in the summer) specific tee shots on my home course. Love the club, but getting to the right feel has been the hard part.

I screwed up one club by being obsessed with the measured swingweight; put too much hot melt into the head. This changed the playing characteristics of the club, and didn't feel good anyway. My experience was that if you add enough weight to the head to compensate on the swingweight scale for the shorter shaft, it'll feel like a brick at the end of a stick and perform poorly to boot.

The second go-round, I went to the range and added lead tape a little at a time until I got what I wanted. Didn't obsess about the measured swingweight, but did obsess about the way the club actually felt and played. BTW, if you go this route, I'd use either the 3g premade strips or tungsten weight pads; they are much easier and quicker to work with at the range than cutting lead tape off a roll at minimal extra expense.

Anyway, after I got to a feel that worked without negatively impacting the performance of the club, I took the weight pads off and made sure of the weight on a scale, then cut and added lead tape in that weight. The swingweight measures a bit lighter than my other clubs ON THE SCALE, but feels the same to me and performs beautifully.
