Top Five Courses You Want to Play----That you realistically will be able to!

Recommended Posts

We have a ton of threads about the "dream" courses we all want to play, Augusta, Cypress, etc. I think realistically most of us know that in all liklihood, we probably won't ever get on them (at least I know I wont'). I would be curious as to courses people want to play that are actually doable in the hopefully near future.

For me:

Sandhills--Been invited three times and never was able to make it work. I won't turn it down again. It's actually fairly close to us, and there are a couple of members at our club, so it is actually a possibility.

Wolf Creek--Read so much about here. I've never been to Mesquite, but maybe this spring.

Perry Park CC in Larkspur Co--My son got married there a couple of years ago and the setting at the base of the Rockies is just spectacular.

Southern Dunes in Phoenix--I've read a lot about this one from the guys in the SW forum, sounds like a great track. If we don't make Mesquite this spring, maybe Phoenix.

Antler Creek in Colorado Springs, C0--Over 8,000 yards from the tips, just have to expierence it.

Lets hear the ones that are on the short list that you will actually be teeing it up on.

I like this version of the course thread.
Augusta and Cypress just dont seem likely.

I've not gotten to Bandon. Prob top of my list.
And when in Oregon, want to include Bend and play Pronghorn and Tetherow.
Next would be Pasatiempo, I'm going to San Diego next week, maybe golf..., but Its a visit to sick relative, so seems out of reach.
In Myrtle, Want to play many, but True Blue and Caledonia sit atop.
Not sure how many that is, but its my list to cross off the top 100 for this year .

I hope to play all of these someday and depending on my level of play this season several this year.
1. Whistling Straits
2. Cog Hill
3. Harvester
4. Pete Dye at French Lick
5. Blackwolf Run
*If things play out, I hope to play Whistling Straits/Blackwolf Run on one trip, and the Dye& Ross course on another. Harvester is a day trip away, so that should be one that gets done. That would be 4 of my 5!

My bucket list includes six public US Open courses (past & future) and I have two left to get to - Pebble Beach and Erin Hills. (Pinehurst #2, Bethpage Black, Torrey Pines, and Chambers Bay are all 'been there, done that'.

In addition, the trip to Bandon will hopefully happen in the next two or three years. (Counting that as one.)

And finally, a golf trip to Northern Ireland, hopefully ticking off Royal Portrush and Royal County Down.

I will say the top 5 I will ACTUALLY play this year:

Erin Hills
Frech Lick Resort (Dye)
The Harvester
TPC Deere Run
Boone Valley (Augusta, Mo)
[/quote]

Sounds like a hell of a year. I'm trying to get both French Lick courses done this year myself.

My top 5 that I will play are:
Whistling Straits
Bandon (x4)
Pasatiempo
Shadow Creek
Old Course.

Now I just need to figure out how.

I have a decent shot at Sand Hills and National Golf Links...we'll have to see how those play out.

Fisher's Island - Going this summer
TPC Boston
Congressional
Maidstone is a possibility though it fell through on me last year
Cape Kidnappers and Kauri are also on my list but I'll need a 2-3 week window to make the surf/golf trip worth it.

Haiku as a sig?
They may be overrated
But I'm rocking one!

I'm going to cheat and list five areas that I want to visit rather than five courses.

1. Southwest Ireland - Lahinch, Tralee, Waterville, Doonbeg, Old Head, Killareny etc

2. Kent, England - Royal St Georges, Royal Cinque Ports, Caart Hills Littlestone etc

3. Northern Michigan - Arcadia, Kingsley, Treetops, Balck Forest, Forest Dunes, Boyne etc

4. Streamsong, FL - Red & Blue

5. Hawaii - too many to list

I'll give you six - I have no idea how I will get on to Augusta, Cypress Point, Seminole or Alotian... I am just not connected to the southern or western golf scene. Here are my remaining top 6 not yet played that are doable.

Oakmont - a few members are members at my club
Shinnecock - have already played The National, and am work associates with a few members, so I figure it can't be too far out of reach
Fishers Island - apparently our club pro has a hook up, but have not asked
The Ocean Course - public
Pebble Beach - public
Cape Kidnappers - public

My list will stay the same but after thinking of this today I have been researching my choices. Harvester and Cog Hill may be first on my hit list. I can get on harvester and cog hill during the week pretty cheaply, and they are day trips for me. Heck, maybe even take a personal day for one! Perhaps then I can see what type of damage they do to my psyche before I spend for mind blowing, game crushing round at Whistling straights/Blackwolf or Dye/Ross at French Lick.
Hopefully I'll emerge with my confidence still intact so I can continue on my quest.

Ballybunion - have a standing invite, just a matter of getting over there
Pine Valley - have some friends in the Philly area who may be able to swing it one day
Old Memorial - same as Ballybunion
Riviera/LACC - old friend may join LA, has played Riviera a few times and keeps talking about an LA buddy trip. May happen before I die.

When you do, can you include another guest on your first three?(hint hint)

Funny thing is the first 3 are the easiest to get on with a friend. No way that happens in Memphis or cclr.

Paa Ko Ridge outside of Albuquerque is a hidden gem IMO. I know it is regularly listed in Golf Digest as one of the top 50 you can play in the US, but it doesn't get much mention on these boards. That's probably due to the somewhat remote location. Great course.

I like this variation of the question too. I've been fortunate enough to play many of the ones already listed. My selections:

1. Pebble/Spyglass/Pasatiempo. Never been to the area. Have this on my radar for 2014. Obviously would love to get on Cypress, but not holding my breath. If I jump over a fence, how many holes to do you think I could get in before getting arrested? (Bail is probably less than green fee anyway.)
2. Valhalla
3. Streamsong
4. Cabo
5. Shadow Creek
6. Going to list one extra that isn't exclusive/impressive. No one else will list it so I dare to be different. I have played all the RTJ Trail locations except I've never played Highland Oaks in Dothan, AL. So I want to play it someday to complete the entire thing.
