Golf Clubs in Kansas City/Overland Park Area

Recommended Posts

To all KC area WRXers - I am wrestling with the idea of joining a club in the Overland Park area, and have narrowed it to the following three choices:

1. Loch Lloyd

2. Lionsgate

3. Wolf Creek

I am 30, so a junior member at all 3, which is good. Any advice from current/former/prospective members of any of these three clubs?

thanks!

Can't elaborate more at this time, but I would definitely choose Wolf Creek.

my reservation(s) with Wolf Creek are (1) my wife can't play there (this is both a plus, and a minus), (2) proximity to my house (its about 15 minutes vs. 2 min to lionsgate and 10 to loch lloyd) and (3) initiation fee expenses. i love the track, and my brother in law is a member, but im hesitant to pull the trigger just yet.

All three are nice, if you are in OP then LL is a bit of a drive but I love LL, have not played the new holes yet, but the course is playable and fun. I like Wolf Creek as well, my experience is they have the best greens in town, perhaps right alongside Shadow Glenn. Not that big of a fan of Lionsgate, don't really have a reason, just doesn't seem in the same league as the others. I know a lot of people really like MIlburn CC as well, but that course always just beats the tar out of me everytime I play there.

thanks for the input. played the new holes at loch lloyd last fall and the course is incredible. total serenity on the back 9, definitely a different vibe than lionsgate. Lionsgate is on the radar solely based on proximity to my house (im at 143rd & antioch). Loch Lloyd is about 8 miles, or 10-15 min, about the same as wolf creek.

decisions, decisions!

Why not Golf Club of Kansas? Man, I love that place. Nice folks and a wonderful golf course.

I can't compare the two courses, but I can compare the clubhouse and practice facilities ... they don't compare.
I wasn't sure about your spouse situation or if you played with her much. I just assumed not since it wasn't mentioned. That does change things a little.

My best friend is a member at Wolf Creek, he is 26. I didn't think he had an initiation when he joined late last year.
The practice facilities and "Amen Corner" are amazing.
If I still lived in Kansas City, I would definitely be a member there.

Lionsgate is a great course. I played it 4-5 years ago and walked it twice watching the Web.com Tour.

A couple reasons: 1) it's much further from where I live, 2) i've found its layout to be gimmicky, at times 3) its always super crowded, in my experience, and 4) no amenities for the wife & family

the initiation fee at wolf creek isnt a ton ~5k, but it is due basically upfront, which can be off-putting and a bit of a strain financially.

Qmany - i think we may have a friend in common in A. Wulff. He and I grew up together in Sedalia

You're doing yourself a disservice by not checking out Shadow Glen. Far better course than Wolf Creek. Best practice facility in KC. Best course in KC, IMO, and I've played them all. Certainly doesn't remind you of KS when you're out there. Pretty good ladies group for your wife. Not sure what initiation, etc. is now, but very affordable when I was a member there.

I have heard great things about Shadow Glen, but it's about 20 miles from my house, which is a dealbreaker for me. My gut is leaning toward Loch Lloyd, especially after the redesign. Wolf is much more business-oriented, which could be good as well. Lionsgate was great for proximity, but lacked character, IMO.

I'm not a fan of subdivision golf courses. I like to get out by myself and escape, play 2-3 holes, practice, etc. Wolf Creek is a sanctuary.
Loch Lloyd is a good choice though.

i've played all three of those. was only on LL once, played 9 on the old course and 9 on the new. wasn't that impressed with the old, but the new was great...not exactly walkable from what i remember. not sure what it costs to be a member of the full 36, from what i've heard they were going to split membership between the old and the new.

lions gate is a good course with a great clubhouse, probably been on there 6-8 times. from what i've heard the initiation is there, i wouldn't do it. another course not easily conquered by foot.

wolf creek was a great course that i'd put right on par with The National as far as the course goes, which is my favorite in KC (never been on Shadow). Clubhouse at The National is pretty impressive, whereas wolf is only so-so. been on it twice and it'll challenge you for sure...pretty tough finish. greens rolled superbly. something like 75% of its membership also has a membership at another club so it's not really ever that busy and doesn't get much traffic so conditions are really good. again, not easily walkable though i've seen some do it.

i'd be amiss if i didn't give a quick shout-out to my club - Brookridge at 103rd and antioch. clubhouse is great after the remodel and fitness facilities are the best of any club in the area that i know of. pool area is always hopping in the summer. course is good that is fair for juniors, seniors, beginners, women, etc and still present a challenge for the better player. one other major benefit in my eyes that i'm not sure anywhere else has is that the owners of Brookridge also just purchased Leawood South - meaning that for one membership you get access to two private courses. it's also nice to have access to our little 9 hole course on the west side of antioch (four par 3s, three par 4s, two 5s) for monday play when the 18 hole side is closed. also, be sure to get the details of membership before making a decision, i went through this a few years ago and some places charge extra for carts, range balls, have minimums, asessments, etc. we have no minimums, carts and range balls are included. for $368 after taxes and everything else you can get a membership for both you and your wife to both clubhouses, pools, and 45 holes.

i'm not going to pretend like our course is as good as wolf or anything like that, but we certainly have some advantages others do not.

if you or anyone else is reading this and interested, feel free to email me "][email protected] i'm on the member advisory committee so i know the ins and outs pretty well.

 • 5 months later...

I'm relocating from Chicago for a job and will be arriving at the end of September. I will be looking to possible join a private club or buy a yearly pass to a nice course. Just wanted to get any advice from anyone that knows the area? My wife and I are looking at houses in Blue Springs, Lees Summit and Liberty (or as people call it the Northlands). Actually if anyone knows anyone that is looking to rent a nice house let me know? Probably would only go max rent of $1350 as I will buy after a year or two..... Back to the golf, let me know what you guys think? I will be looking to hook up with a good group of guys who take there golf serious but don't mind grabbing a beer after the round. My email is [email protected]. Any input is appreciated. Thanks!
