I’m hitting them fat.

The golf courses are not open yet they open tomorrow so I went out to the park and hit a few ball around. I was hitting them pretty good and the swing wasn’t too bad ball flight was straight or a draw, but I was catching my longer irons fat about 1 out of every 7or8 shots. My swing doesn’t feel too bad but is their anything I can work on to help this ie; drills, hitting shots fat usually cost me 1-2 strokes a round normally.

Ok here goes. Just my opinion. I have been a PGA professional for 15 years and have been a teacher for 14 of those 15.

Fat shots.

Check ball position. Might be to far forward.

Shoulder turn. Could be a reverse pivot type situation. Make sure you are getting behind the ball (so to speak). swaying can cause all sorts of problems.

Swing could be to up and down.(steep) Tiger Drill. Try to get wide. The wider your swing the the less up and down it will be and thus less prone to fat shots.

That is all that I can think of without seeing you swing. Hope that one of those might help.

As an additional item to check to the above --

make sure you are getting weight to the front foot and staying level.

maybe after 7-8 shots, you are tired - maybe you're casting, maybe you're not getting weight to the front. Stay aggressive.

Two things that can cause fat shots (but these aren't the only two):

Early release and flipping of the wrists pre-impact. (I know, I am working on this myself)

Hip sliding instead of turning. This will cause you to sweep your hips forward and drop your right shoulder close to the ground.

Regardless hit a few shots with your wrists cocked. Here is a video of the Big Easy and the announcers actually talk about the fact that Ernie will sometimes NOT hold his angle and hit them high. This can be chunky for you an me because we are hacks:

Well, more than 2 things can cause fat shots -- as listed above.

Having had years of experience on the subject, one just must go through the checklist -- casting-flipping/sliding -- certainly are two culprits -- but not the only ones.

You may want to try and shorten your swing at the top and firm up your left wrist also make sure you do not have to much lower body movement(dipping crap like that) and your swing is not to steep.

Ah, yes, the olde dip -- know it all too well.

It's a tough game when you don't play every day to reinforce the good habits.
