J's Professional Weapon

Recommended Posts

It's not quite the same as the classic stuff being discussed regularly. Picked up one of the legends of the early metal wood days, a J's Professional Weapon driver. It specs at 11.5°, but it was measured at 11°.

With the modern balls and my newfound lower trajectory, it might make for some entertainment.

Second pic of the sole, first pic shows it at address with a ball for size perspective.

These were made for all three Ozaki brothers, Jumbo, Joe, and Jet. Supposed to be very low spin, to the point folks wondered if they were illegal.

There have been suggestions this driver was given some credit for Nicklaus's contending in the 90 Masters, at age 50.

Golf wasn't in my life yet at the time of the J's driver. Being someone for whom spin off the tee has been an issue, I've been intrigued by the stories; it was compared to a Precept 260LS in robot testing, a club I still own. A fellow golf nerd offered me a J's driver recently, through a different golf forum. I've played persimmon retro golf off and on over the last several years, I thought it would be interesting to try "old school metal wood retro golf" as well.

I also own, as a trade throw in from years ago, a Founders Club 3 wood. Also not too forgiving, but absurdly long when flushed. Might be fun to carry the two together. LOL

I'll never forget the 1st time I saw a J's Driver. It was around 1991 or 92 in a pro shop in Naples, Florida. At the time they were hard to come by. I think they were asking about 400 or something crazy for the driver, when other drivers were going for a fraction of the price. It looked amazing though. I later picked up a 10 deg J's driver and a 3 wood at Nevada Bobs about 2 years later, barely used, still got them. The 3 wood was scary long off the tee.

i have an old magizine from 1991 where they test this club and found you had to have a tour caliber swing to get any benifit from it. this is THE club that started the desighner driver fad . even tho joe public knew it wasnt desighned for his game-he had to have it. i cant hit the one i have for beens but have a knockoff that i could just crush. i doubt its insides are the same as the bridgestone . just looks sim on the out side.

I see used ones for sale quite often in Japan. The Japanese version has different shafts, as usual. Last year I had a set of J's irons with FM7.0's in them. Talk about swing a cement pole. The true J's had a cement shaft in it, too.

You could rip your right off if you hit one a little thin on a cold winter morning.

Old Jumbo took a healthy whack at it. He was a baseball pitcher before he turned to golf.

During his heyday, they wouldn't even televise a tournament if Jumbo wasn't playing. They also trimmed the course to match his game to give him an edge. They would mow down the rough in the spot he would fly his drive on a dogleg. No one else could hit it there, so got an extra edge from the run or a great lie where others 10 yards shorter would be in foot-deep rough.

The game was rigged in his favor because people loved to watch him win.

He ended up losing a lot of money on stupid businesses his friends and family talked him into. He blew millions of dollars and was bankrupt (or near bankrupt).

(I'm stuck inside with a big typhoon coming through today and tomorrow, so pardon my excessive posting. :) )

bought out by private equity.

capitalization, grammar and reasoning slashed as a cost reduction.

i could only imagine how stiff a 7 feq match brunswick shaft is. i have what may be a rare j driver. its the only one i have ever seen . its got an R shaft in it and NOT a re shaft but the correct factory shaft. i bought it thinking it would be collectable some day. i cant hit it any better than the standard version

7.0 isn't that bad. It's roughly comparable to DGX100. Because of the slightly softer tip of the Precision shaft, I'd say it might play a touch softer.

The 7.5 shaft is really a lot of fun. :)

Just picked up one this morning at Goodwill for $3. Can't walk away from it for $3 right? This one has "Augusta" stamped on the bottom. I'm guessing it was one that was mass produced back in 1990 when it became all the rage after Augusta. If I remember right, after 3 rounds of The Masters, Ray Floyd was leading at age 46 and Nicklaus was 5th at age 50 and both were playing the drivers that Jumbo gave them. After that, everybody wanted one...and now I have one!

I remember seeing those J's drivers around. I usually played a Taylor Made Burner or Founder's Club. My all-time favorite driver was the Founder's Club Judge. It was the first titanium head driver I played. It also had a titanium shaft. I loved hitting that thing. Part of me wishes golf had stayed in that era.

Resurrecting my old thread, complete with Photobucket's ruining of the embedded image...

(I'll see about editing the first post with a URL to the image for any who care to see it)

After many years of thinking about it, I FINALLY took my J's Professional Weapon out on the course. It's 11.5°, I had installed a tipped SK Fiber Tour Trac 100 Xstiff shaft at 43.5" a couple years ago, lead taped to D5 swingweight. The loft is amusing to me, it wasn't all that long ago I was still playing a 7° driver. LOL

Went out cold yesterday afternoon for twilight golf, managed to finish 18 holes, paired with a pleasant gentleman who plays in the men's club at my course. He got a kick out of seeing the very small head of the J's driver, and was very interested in seeing how it played. Had he not been LH, I would have let him take a few swings.

In honor of this occasion, I also put the 1 iron in my bag, in place of the 3h that I normally use in that loft slot. I didn't think I had any HT-100s in my bag (turned out I had one, that a friend had found on the course), or I'd have gone all out in a 90s retro extravaganza. (wound up using a Srixon ZStar)

It was actually very interesting. My first couple holes, I suffered through the sub-optimal shots one sees from a 50something body not properly warmed up, but then my tee game rose to the occasion. In spite of the tiny clubhead, I started hitting flushed tee shots, with distance being fairly normal to a bit above average, as compared to my tee game with my King LTD driver. The only issue I had was a tendency to hit overcooked draws; I spent a fair bit of time in the left rough.

I was pleasantly surprised enough that I'll be keeping it in the bag for my next round. :pimp:

The highlight of the evening was as we played the last two holes. We'd skipped #13 and #14 due to a very slow, and oblivious, threesome ahead of us, going from #12 green to #15 tee. We then played #1 and #2 a second time to make up for it. I dug into the bag and found my lone Maxfli HT100 in the bottom of the bag. It didn't come from my stash of new in box purchases over the last several years, so it wasn't quite up to its potential, but I thought it would be fun anyway.

Hit it down the middle into the breeze with a little draw to follow the slight dog leg. Really enjoyed that. Flipped a SW to the green to 6 ft, made the putt for birdie.

Next hole, I'd put a Volvik ball on the tee instead of the Maxfli. This hole also doglegs a bit to the left. It's a bit short, though longer than #1, and more trees in play such that I usually hit my 1 iron. My playing partner asked if I was going to try fit a draw into the shape of the hole, because I'd pulled the Maxfli out of the bag, so I told him I'd give it an effort. And I managed to hit a draw that followed the hole pretty well, wound up in the center of the fairway, at a somewhat silly distance for an out of shape 50+ guy. ;)

Drawing that 1 iron into the hole was indeed the highlight of my round. LOL

Now that I've veered off track... yes, J's Professional Weapon. Solid stick. Quality. Low trajectory. Quite low. Did I mention low trajectory? :) Obviously not as forgiving as modern stuff, but very serviceable, and the distance was quite reasonable. On the parallel alternate/opposite direction #6 and #7 par 4s, I found myself having hit tee shots at least as far as my usual on those holes. After playing a 460cc driver for a while, it's disconcerting looking down at the small clubhead, which is smaller than even my persimmons, but I managed to adjust to the visual, and hit some quality shots.

Somewhat interesting note... I heeled my tee shot on #17. It wound up going shorter, as one would expect from a club this size, but was considerably more on line than I expected. Or what I might have seen from a similarly heeled shot from my King LTD. Gives one pause.

Repeating myself, I'll be keeping the J's in the bag for my next round...

Our Pro got a couple by getting member, who was in Florida on holiday, to buy them for him. Very solid feel, bullet low flight and ran out much better than anything else on the market at the time. I think Andrew McGee and some other players used them successfully. The matching irons were also superb, apart from the usual thick sole / high pounce sand iron.

Ah, This brought back some memory.

I had never owned one, just handled it in the golf shop when they had several sets in. I remembered, the stiff graphite shaft and it was long ( think it was 45"-45 1/2" ) comparing to other drivers at the time. Green paint fill with green graphite shaft. Full cord grip with green thread in it.......

I honestly could not afford it at the time.

Later on , almost bought a set of J's Professional Weapon irons. Never happened because the local brick and mortar shop only had a couple of sets of these J's and not a penny less than the asking price.

The shaft in the original J was great

Low spin, hard to keep in the air, incredibly low loft on the ones that came on tour

Funny story...jumbo went on a run about this Time when the J’s were hot.

In one of the big events (Dunlop Phoenix maybe?)) fuzzy Zoeller got blitzed by Jumbo, finishing high

But miles behind Jumbos winning score

He came back raving about how far Jumbo was past him with that driver.

They played at the Masters the next year. Still playing the “J” but now behind Fuzzy off the tee......

Speculation was rampant at the time, but thought it funnny

Great posts here on the J's driver. I have three of them, 8.5*, 9.5*, 11* (about that). I am going to regrip one and give her a sample of a few rounds under some pressure at my club, not just bang it around on Tuesday afternoon, and see how she really performs against my newer stuff. The few times I hit her, it was definitely hard to use due to the size but a bucket of balls could cure that. Definitely flew far but I play a draw and these cut right on me for some reason. Maybe the shaft or open face bias? But I put it next to a modern 3 wood and there was not much difference in size.

Since we've been resurrected.... :pimp:

I've been giving a lot of thought to taking my J's on the course for some extended play. We'll see if I actually put my money whereis my mouth, or if this is just can't-play-golf-frozen-brain-in-winter syndrome. LOL

I managed to pick up a J's 3 wood, also. And will be taking it to the course as well, probably even if I don't play the J's driver. Why not, right?

J’s professional Weapon was specifically designed with an unusually high center of gravity to counter the up shooting tendencies of wound golf balls. It was designed to reduce spin and trajectory of the old balata covered wound golf ball. Because of reduced spin, it also created more toll upon landing.

Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman both claimed that they could drive it 30 yards longer with a Js, than their older design drivers.

I found a nice J's 15* 3 wood also, I'm going to put them both in play for a real round just to see how I do. Gotta love tinkering w/ the old stuff.

In the Classic Golf vein, there's usually a jump to persimmon, or a bit earlier to Hickories. With good reason. But, I find there's a certain charm to playing old metal woods; sub-300cc drivers and varying forms of 80s-90s era fairway woods. An era that's largely skipped. <shrug>

Perhaps I feel that way due to my having started somewhat late, picking up the game in late 1998 (thanks to #2 son). I got a short couple years of the above, then on to the supersized driver world.

In any event, I find it interesting to revisit those years.

Spent last night surfing the intarwebs for TM 200 Steel drivers and fairways, or Mizuno TZoid forged drivers to match the 13* 3w I'd picked up a couple years ago. And I've always got an old Wishon 545LS driver (275cc IIRC) lying around....
