Shipping clubs to Italy?

I'll be traveling to Punta Ala, Italy for 10 days in July and am curious about shipping my clubs. I'll have an opportunity to play at minimum four rounds and would really like to have my own equipment rather than rent something.

What is the best way to ship? Is it safe? How long should I allow?

Any additional information would be much welcome, thanks!

What's wrong with taking them on the plane?

Be careful with Italian airports. They love to steal ...can't tell you how many times i had to claim a bag stolen and its always the most expensive bag of luggage.
