Need a mid-range ball that stops on the green

Hey,

I'm looking for a ball that spins a decent amount.. not enough for it to spin back, but enough for it to basically stop around 2-4 feet from its divot on the green. Any suggestions?

Academy has the ZStar prior model for $19.99.

As for my recommendation I say go with the 2013 QStar. It is long off the driver, feels great off all clubs, usually my ball stops at my pitch mark or within about 3-4 feet. I have had some actually back up but that was with square grooved wedges. I think you can get them for $24.99 most places but I think Academy has them at $19.99 right now.

Have you guys ordered from these sites before? Some of them I've never even heard of

Several times over the last few years from budgetgolf, mostly balls (including FG Tours).

I got some FootJoy Sport shoes at a real good price from GPP once.

You can go to any golf store right now and pick up the last year model of Srixons... and the Hex chromes/ plus are at a really good price

The market for golf balls no longer supports every manufacturer sitting back and raking in $40+ a dozen as the entry-level price for "Tour" urethane performance. There's always good quality balls of that type at every price point from a buck fifty a ball to three times that much and everything in between.

Unless you're looking for a 50-cent ball you can pretty much decide what type of performance (i.e. how much spin) you want without worrying too much about cost.

Very interested in this "Z-star for $19.99" at Academy.

The academy website says the Z-Stars are $29.99 (and not available on-line) ... http://www.academy.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CatalogSearch?Rc=120&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&catalogId=10051&langId=-1&storeId=10151&N=558540862+4294951261

Do you have go into the store for the $19.99?

Also, wonder if anyone can compare the Z-star XV to the old Callaway tour "iZ".

Thanks,

The XV and the iZ are not worlds apart in their performance. Both are on the firm side and pretty low spin off the driver. Decent spin into greens but not super spinny. Sound and feel is probably where they differ most. The iZ is a bit clickier off the putter and short irons. Around the greens, the sound and feel of the iZ makes me think it's not spinning as much as a softer ball, although it actually spins a bit more than the XV for me.

If you like the Callaway, than I would give a try to the Hex Chrome or Hex Chrome+. They are both really good balls. Also, for the price the Nike 20Xi-X is not bad either.

Z Stars, Cally Chrome, Cally Hex TOur Diablo. My current favorite in that price point is the TM Burner tour or Burner TP. Great ball, long, soft, spins and is like $20 a dozen.

I know I sound like a broken record now but the Bridgestone xFIXx is a solid all around ball for $20 a dozen. They won't wow you in any one area but they do everything from tee to green pretty well. Durability is about the only negative I'd have to say about them.

And if you can find them the previous generation Z-stars are $20 doz. at Academy.

Yeah but xFIx don't spin...
Read the OP again, he's not asking for it to spin. The OP is asking for it to stop within a few feet of the ball mark and the xFIXx does do that. As do a lot of balls on the market but the xFIXx was just my suggestion.

On the greens I play, that is definitely not the xFIXx by any means.

Z-star will certainly fit the bill.

Way to eliminate 3/4 of the post for your benefit. Apparently you read that portion and didn't bother to read the rest.

I read it. I responded to it with a followup trying to clarify exactly what he was looking for. I made suggestions for specifics balls at specific prices from specific vendors that I felt would serve his entire stated need (unless he had responded otherwise to my request for clarification. If I totally misunderstood him, presumably he would have pointed that out but instead he asked for additional information on my suggested sources of affordable balls that spin.

So maybe it's you who missed the point. But if he really wants a ball that doesn't spin instead of one that spins "a decent amount" then your suggestion is a perfectly cromulent one.

Fair enough and my apologies, I failed to see your first response to the OP. I responded to the OP in what I understood he was asking for which is a ball that would stop within a few feet of the ball mark and in my experience with my ball flight the xFIXx does just that. So it is a perfectly acceptable suggestion.

For large portions of the year the greens I play on will make even a Pro V1 hop forward a foot or so on a 7-iron or 6-iron approach shot. Of course that may say as much about my lack of clubhead speed as the firmness of the greens. So that's the assumption I always start from unless someone tells me different. It's caused me to basically conclude (for my game on my home course at least) that it's going to take a pretty darned spinny ball to consistently stop near the ball mark.

I also play very occasionally on a public course with tiny (Harbor Town size or smaller), rock-hard greens grassed with Common Bermuda. On that course the ball I play hardly matters. I can't spin even a Pro V1 enough to stop with a 7-iron. I have to land it on the very front of the green and let it roll forward within longer than a 9-iron. It's kind of fun...four or five times a year for a change of pace.
