Choosing a Shaft, Cleveland 460 Comp

1st Time on a Launch Monitor
Last Friday I finally got a clubfitting and spent a little time on the Launch Monitor.

First thing we did was measure all of my shafts for flex, I don't have the specific CPM's. My irons are new CG1's with the standard S300's, they all measured equivalent to X100's with the 9-PW slightly stiffer than X, very interesting! My hybrid with the NV85-S shaft measured Regular. My 3-Wood with the speeder measured as it should at a Stiff. And finally my Driver with the ProLaunch 65S, measured below a regular in stiffness. Not sure if the lower end shafts lose stiffness with play, I have at least a 75 rounds not including range time on this shaft. I just sent the driver back in to Cleveland for a new head(Cracked Crown), I told them about the shaft and asked to replace with X-Stiff if it needed replaced.

Once we checked out my shafts it was onto the Launch Monitor. First up was my 5-Iron, I hit balls earlier in the morning so I was farily loose. My normal ball flight for all clubs including driver is low, I have a steep swing. The club head speed was in the 93-95 range with ball carry 198-203. My sidespin was in the 90-160 range.

My driver was next and that was the real reason for getting on the monitor. I have always hit a low driving ball that is either straight or with a slight draw. I have continually increased my driver loft over the years from 7.5 to where I am at now 9.5 to gain more of a higher ball flight. Here are the numbers.

AVG. Clubhead Speed- 112-116
AVG. Ball Speed- 168-172
AVG. Backspin- 3300-3350
AVG. Sidespin- 50-95
AVG. Launch Angle-11.0-12
AVG. Ball Carry-270-274

I'm not an expert but I think my launch angle could be increased to gain more carry. I tried a couple different shafts also while I was on the monitor. The first was the MCC MFS Matrix in a KZG 10 deg, launch angle was about the same but the carry was slightly better than my Cleveland. Then I tried the Diamana 73 in a stiff(Can't remember the head but it was 9.5deg), my launch dropped to 8.8-9.0 on every shot. I was carrying the same 270ish and hitting the ball absolutely straight every time.

I am going to move to a 10.5deg head in my Comp, and am looking to go with a new shaft(NVS, MFS Matrix, Diamana, etc.). Any suggestions, I think that I am in need of a higher launch shaft in an S-X or X flex. I have a smooth swing and am playing to a 3.4 index.

Thanks for the Help!

Wow. That's some great info and an enviable swing, too. The only thing that's missing would be a description of your tempo and transition, whether you're mostly a hitter (lots of right hand) or a swinger (less right hand), and what miss you'd most like to eliminate ( a pull, a block, and so forth).

The shafts you mentioned might work well, except I don't like the NVS for that swing since the one thing which stands out is that you could use some lower spin numbers. The Matrix is an outstanding shaft (I'm an MCC dealer, but carry other lines too) and comes in various trajectories. Do you know whether you hit a low, mid or high traj? Just from what you've mentioned I'd suggest the Matrix in mid or even low trajectory, in X2 subflex. With the 10.5 driver head (I really like that move) you most likely won't need a high-launch shaft anymore - tee it high and you know the rest. Teeing the ball higher will also help reduce spin a bit...

If your swing has some hit in it, and your miss is NOT a pull, then the MCC Woven is also worth a look - very much an anti-hook shaft, and even lower spin than the Matrix - probably go with X1 in the Woven. Doesn't feel as springy, so if you pull the ball it's not a good choice - there's a tendency to rush in an effort to feel it load.

Also worth a look - the NV75 X, the ACCRA SC75 X, the ACCRA T70 M5. The fact that you hit the Diamana so straight is a good sign, and if you can handle the bux then the higher tee and higher loft should help with the launch angle.

The main thing I'm trying to say is that for a strong swing like yours it's usually best to fix launch angle with loft and tee-height, NOT with shaft choice, to address hook and draw tendencies with face angle, and to address spin, tempo, swingspeed/load, pulls and blocks with the shaft. For a slower swing typical of most golfers I might help LA with the shaft, but for you it's ony going to add unneeded spin. Good luck!

Thanks for the input. I am a hard but smooth swinger, can those two go in the same sentance? Earlier this summer I actually shortened my backswing and lost a little bit of distance but gained great amounts of control and consistency. My normal shot is a slight draw, my miss is when I overswing and I will hit a slight fade.

I've got a 10.5deg. Comp coming from cleveland, I would love to have the Diamana or an equivalent. I hit it absolutely straight every shot and even though my launch was 8.8-9.0 I was carrying the same distance as my higher launched shots with the ProLaunch.

First off, if you want launch angle stick with the Prolaunch, anything else you will loose to some extent. Second, CPM readings can be misleading, a stiffer tip shaft will CPM out different than the softer tip shaft like a Prolaunch.

I'd say, move up 1-1.5° in loft, move to a lower spinning clubhead, and stick with a Prolaunch. You will like this setup the best.
