High gloss factory shine on ferrules

Trap Junior

Recommended Posts

Clubs that come from the factory have a smooth high gloss shine. It's pretty obvious that they are treated with some sort of varnish. I have tried nail varnish myself just experimenting and it does give you that high gloss shine but its impossible to apply it well with a brush as you leave brush marks instead of the mirror shine. I have tried dipping the ferrules in varnish but didnt have much luck with this as the drip went semi solid. What do they do in the factory to get that mirror smooth shine? Is it possible to get this?

Acetone and the 600 grit sandpaper isn't satisfactory when you compare it to the factory finish.

Acetone willwork fine, it's all in the technique.

Yep, all technique. I turn them down with emery cloth if they're much more than a fraction large then finish off with acetone on a piece of an old t-shirt (no lint like a paper towel would have). Of they're close already, I just turn them down with the acetone soaked t-shirt. I then finish them up with quick vertical swipes with the rag AFTER rewetting it with acetone. Waxing them will also help with the shine if they're not shiny enough.

If you contact cell-parts for ferrules they will normally ask you what outside diameter you're looking for which minimizes any turning. Even better is that they may also do some of the batches and know the specs off hand. I've also had success using grip solvent as the final wipe down. Found it helps create that shine.

Also of note, some try to use nail polish remover as a sustitute for the acetone as it has it in there. From personal experience, the pure acetone as mentioned above will give much better results.

OEM Ferrules aren't usually "turned" ... they fit out of the bag. Whatever finish the supplier uses, is what gives them their shine.

I've tried every method imaginable and I can't get them as good as "unturned" ferrules.

^^ This

Manufacturers buy so many ferrules at a time that they can specify exactly the size they want so all they have to do is wipe the excess epoxy off. If you experiment enough, you may find some that are the exact size you need.

When buying ferrules, you want to find the ferrule that just barely covers the hosel. I personally use a soft lint free cloth (cut up old bed sheets) soaked liberally in acetone to get the ferrule even with the hosel, then I finish it up with car polish (Meguiar's Scratch X works great, it has fillers in it that make it shine really nice).

Another way to get the ferrule to shine is to heat it up slightly, but you have to be very careful unless you want to take the club apart just to replace a screwed up ferrule.

I use that linen belt Golfworks sells with acetone and it works fine with a very nice factory shine. It took many tries and clubs to get the technique just right though. In a nutshell I just smear the acetone on there, give it a few seconds, and then use a very light buffing and slowly increase the pressure as the acetone starts to evaporate. The part that took me a while to learn is feeling for and knowing when to increase or decrease the pressure and speed. I do this on a vice which helps a ton.

But I was pretty frustrated when I first started trying to get it right but now I kinda like doing it and take pride in how the finished product looks without using a sander. So don't give up, just keep messing with it and you'll soon find a technique for it.

I currently have ferrules which come around 1.5mm oversize so I use a nail file to sand them down then use the shoe shime motion with 200, 400, 600 sandpaper. Then I use white spirit, then nail polish remover soaked in a t shirt. Now it looks very neat and well and very professional (as good as anything off the Tour Van) but even they can't get the factory finish. The tour van ferrules arent glossy. They are semi shiny and then lose the shine very quickly.

I think acetone is kind of a health hazard for a 10 cent ferrule...

After I turn mine down I will pour a little acetone on the ferrule and let it sit, always comes out a high gloss finish better looking than original in my opinion.

I've used Windex to good results, based on other advice here.

I agree that it helps when you have the perfect size ferrule, and no finishing work is required.

I've never been able to get that really smooth contestant shine using acetone. Seems there is always some streak somewhere. The OEM's use a cloth belt on a power tool which buffs the ferrule to a nice consistent shine. Best substitute I've found is to use a piece of soft cotton cloth and some plastic polish (sold at auto parts stores). After dressing down the ferrule using sand paper, and taking your best crack at the acetone business, last step is shoe shining using the cloth and plastic polish. If you take your time you can get a real professional appearance this way.

As a guy who built clubs for an OEM I can tell you that you are wrong, we turned every ferrule on every club we built and used nothing but acetone

Cloth belt on a power tool which buffs the ferrule?? Where are you getting this info?

Guys - I am sorry to go on a rant here but I am a bit of a ferrule purist, and I have read for years all the hokie and gimmick ways to turn a ferrule according to people on this site. I am not the end all be all of club builders but I have done it long enough and had the privilege working for three different OEMs.

When I was building clubs none of our ferrules fit, and we wouldn't want them to, hell some of our different wedge models had different hosel diameters, and we only had one ferrule. You glue the club up and then turn the ferrule down once it is set, that is all. You can use a 2" belt if you are speedy or a 1" will work just fine. The traditional white or red linen belts are my favorite but you can also give the composite blue belt if you are new to it. The blue belt is great for starters and will not take paint off shafts. Buy yourself a cheater bar if you are not too stable with the hands. Then get yourself a 4x4 piece of cloth (dry baby wipes are the best) and a plunger can of acetone. Soak the cloth and give it one quick swipe, and you are done. No need for polishes or glazes or any other junk. Buy the right tools and practice your skills and you can forget the rest.

Thanks for the clarification asshat - I didn't call you a hack but since you used such technical terms as "power tool" and "buffiing" you can see where the confusion is. No linen belt is used for buffing to shine - it is there for removing material, in fact all of the links you posted state that. Go ahead and turn a ferrule with a belt sander and let me know how that works for you.

I agree. I used Bounty paper towels instead of the wipes. I wiped vertically (along the shaft) while rotating the club. Then I sprayed the head/ferrule/shaft with mineral spirits and wiped with a paper towel to remove any streaks.

I have seen some polish the ferrule with wax and an unstitched buffing wheel after the above. They will shine enough to see your reflection in them.

I live in Europe. Acetone is illegal. It is in some quantities in nail polish remover but the results are only average. It shines them a touch but they go dull very quick. Maybe thats the problem. You need 100% acetone? Anyway I have got clubs fromt he Mizuno Tour van and they cant shine the ferrules any better than I can but if you see the clubs they produce straight from the factory the ferule finish is so much better. Its like a mirror high gloss shine not a semi matt/gloss finish I get or the tour van gets.

Yes, pure acetone works much better.

IIRC, this topic on the legality of acetone in Europe has come up before. One person said it was illegal, but then someone else chimed in and said it was not and they could get it without issue. I have never lived in Europe, so I don't have any imput worth a crap.

I use sandpaper (any grit 100-200) to get the ferrule flush with the hosel, then rub with steel wool to achieve a smooth finish on the ferrule, then a rag or paper towel soaked in acetone and a few quick swipes up and down. This works every time to yield a factory finish.
