Maxfli Revolution irons: why don't golf clubs look like this anymore?

To be honest I don't know anything about these irons. I saw them when I was browsing the members' WITB forum and fell in love. Now I'm thinking about impulsively buying a set. I haven't been able to find out that much about them other than they are thought very highly of by just about everybody. I think I want the black dot which have slightly smaller heads (as opposed to the red dot midsize heads, correct?), and I'm curious about what degree of "player's clubs" these are. They look like they might be pretty blade-like, similar to MP-62s perhaps. If that's the case they may be a little too much club for me. As a point of reference I normally play Callaway's tour irons. Thanks in advance for advice!

On a slightly unrelated note, has anyone seen Callaway and Cobra's new lines and thought they were the ugliest crap you've ever seen? I wouldn't be caught dead with any of that stuff in my bag. I think I'm gonna start experimenting with older clubs that are tried-and-true rather than try this new stuff that looks like it's marketed towards 12-year-olds.

I have a set of black dots....going to reshaft them as they have R300's which are too weak, remember is you are re shafting they are .370 so you need a parallel shaft not a taper tip.

awesome irons great feel like hitting butter :-)

Great irons. More forgiving than MP-62s IMO--a little longer heel to toe and slightly shallower top to bottom. Amazingly soft feel. Which model of Callaway "tour" irons are you playing? They've released a bunch of those over the years. Those black dots have very very very little offset--pretty much none. That might be a bit of an adjustment coming from your Callaways. The red dots have more of the "normal" amount of offset for a cavity back club.

X-22 tours with px flighted 6.0. If they have less offset than what I'm used to will I tend to push them right?

You needn't worry, offset, or the lack thereof, doesn't cause right/left movement of the ball

I picked up a new set of MaxFli Revolution black dot heads 1-SW a couple years ago from Mr Maxfli. Shafted them with SS X200's. Here is my take on them. Very little offset, very soft feel (bend like butter), thin top line and play with some forgiveness. What I really like about them as a digger, is blunt rounded leading edges and a bit of bounce. I think the forgiveness comes from the shallow cavity and a little longer heal to toe length. I have had 3 other sets of irons since I built these and have no intentions of getting rid of them, permanent back ups. Seems like whenever my swing goes sideways I bring these back out because of the confidence I have in them.

I don't care what my clubs look like as long as they perform. I remember thinking the Ping TISI driver was the ugliest thing I had ever seen when it came out. I was given a 8.5 in X-flex by some old dude that played in a scramble with me just after they came out. No idea why a 70 year old was swinging an X. I have still never found a driver I hit better. I hate that I sold that thing years ago.

I'm having trouble locating these on the USGA site. Anyone know if they are conforming?

Did a search on USGA's website and can't find these clubs.

That is the trouble I was having. I tried every combination of Dunlop, Maxfli, and Revolution I could and came up with nothing.

[/quote]Yikes, that's a painful question on irons this old. The Maxfli Aussie blade and the CB were venerable irons compared to their 90's era counterparts. I'm gonna say no on conforming grooves, USGA database does not have anything to confirm that though.

Are you planning on using Revolutions in national level USGA tournaments? If not the Revs. are still good for regular tournament and handicap usage for another 10 years. All bets are off in 2024 though.

PGA Section events. I've been looking on the site and don't see anything about CoC, but I'd just rather they be conforming. I have a feeling they are not, but I'm holding out hope.

If you like the look of these and want to buy new check out KZG Golf they make really nice stuff for a component company. Their forged stuff is right up there with the best of them. Plus you can put whatever combo set you want together and whatever shaft you want. I had a set of forged cavity backs back in the day they were great.

OK, first and foremost welcome to the website.

secondly, your second point is not really unrelated and your bashing of the new callaway line is completely unfounded. the new Callaway irons are beautiful and...

thirdly, how long have you been working for Maxfli?

I love your response, too funny!

Great irons. Will ding if you even look at them hard. Some forgiveness, but still more demanding than most of today's irons. Thin soles, not the most forgiving club on thin mishits, distance-wise. Still, easier to hit than they look. Will make you look like a better golfer than you really are.

I shafted some black dots with some single chrome ring ferrules and they look spectacular. Nice clean look with no plastic on the back. The older I get the more I start to lean toward Mizuno irons.

For those who have played these extensively, what wedges would you put in the bag to match the look/feel best?

I still have a set of black dots as backups. I got them a few years ago for $100 because they had DG SL's and I wanted to try the shaft and also heard a lot of good things about the clubs. They are as advertised.

Not sure what you have against new Cobra stuff? I got a set of Amp Cell Pros when they came out and I love them to bits! Put a Fly Z+ in the bag this year too. The new stuff performs!
