Scotty Cameron and serial number

Recommended Posts

I'm not a Scotty guru. I have a Scotty Circa 62 #1 i'm trying to sell for a friend. It was purchased thru Golfsmith 4-5years ago....

Trying to sell it on the bay. Having hard time because everyone is asking me for the serial#. I never looked for one before so i had to go online. What i found was "if" there is one its between the grip and the titleist band (loft/lie/length) There isnt one there.

So is it normal not to have one????

Oh the joys of selling on the bay. Everyone is convinced they are all fakes. I also thought serial numbers started with the studio's. I know for a fact my pro platinum mil-spec had no serial number. And it was 100% authentic. If i were buying a circa i wouldnt assume it had a serial number from the factory. Id be examining the pics.

I am not aware of any serial numbers on any putters for SC, there are some tracking number Stickers that are used by Titleist on SC Putters though. Thus, the only way to get a "serial number" is to send the putter in the Custom Shop and have them produce a COA for about $75. This will authenticate it. If you ever wish to purchase a more expensive putter on ebay the COA will always be listed, if not beware. Lower value putters unless a COA has been done generally never have any unless an owner paid for it. It used to be $49 to get a COA but ahhh the price of inflation by SC.

There have never been any serial numbers for Scotty Cameron putters. Recently with the addition of the Titleist hologram on products, I think they do each have a unique number.

Back when the Circa 62 putters came out I think the only "serial number" was actually a number etched onto the shaft which was only applicable to the shaft and not the rest of the putter.

If people are questioning the authenticity of an OTR Circa, just point out the letters in the cavity to them. I believe the 'E' on the legit putters will not be lined up with the other letters. On fakes everything is even and in a straight line.

The numbers etched on the shaft were only applicable to the shaft. They had nothing to do with the head IIRC

I have 5 Scotty's. A Studio Select Newport 2, a California Monterey, a Studio Style Newport 2, a Studio Stainless Newport 2, and a TEI3 Newport 2. All but the TEI3 have a number etched on the back of the shaft just below the grip. Think I read on TCC site that the older models like the TEI3 have no number. Are these numbers not considered serial numbers for the putter?

Seems silly that they would serialize a putter by the shaft. It would be too easy to do either of the following and dramatically effect value:

1. Reshaft with a standard, non-serialized, shaft and it becomes a fake
2. Reshaft with a circle T shaft and it becomes a Circle T.

I'm not an idiot (well I might be) and I don't believe it would be that easy but it seems like having the legitimacy of the putter based on the shaft is not the best way to operate.

BUT I know very little about Cameron's other than they feel great, look awesome and I love them.

To the OP, why not sell it on the BST? If it's fake, 100 members will tell you about it in 10 minutes. If it's real, you can sell it for 30-50% less than you are asking for. Win-Win!

Yes, Cameron does identify by the serial number on the shaft. I emailed the number on my Red X5 and they said it matched an authentic Red X5. Simple as that.

Agree with a previous post however that this system could easily be messed with, but I don't think it's meant to be that high tech. I imagine it's more of an initial identification for business purposes and not so much for authentication on the aftermarkets.

Serial numbers on holo stickers are problematic for a number of obvious reasons.. Wear, peeling, etc etc.. And the holo stickers get harder to read as time goes on.. I've spent what feels like hours trying to read serial numbers off of stickers.. It's rough if your looking for a second hand scotty that has any signs of shaft wear.
