Tournaments - Should Course Provided Golf Balls???

After seeing how the Pros use special golf balls, like the Pro V1x+ mentioned below and the talk about Phil using a Chrome ++... has got me thinking... should the balls be provided to those who enter a Professional Tournament? Should they be those which are just commerically available?? This would be no different than Auto Racing... the teams bring the cars, but to make it fair, the track provides the same fuel to all... I am not saying one ball for all... but whatever brand and model selected should be given to the pros in random... Anybody agree???

your reference to auto racing is not really that relevant. Yes Nascar does provide the same fuel, and even the same tires. But the cars are totally different and all the individual pats af the cars are different even in the same teams. drivers ability sets the way a car is set up. much like the players game is set for the clubs they use. Do you really think that using the same ball would make that much difference? all it takes is for a player to know the characteristics of the ball and adjust their game to it much like the drivers adjust to the tires they are using.

To the point of using a ball that is available to the masses, they use the pro's for research and development much the same as Nascar uses the drivers. The difference here is there is a chance that the balls used by pros may likely be available for consumer use in a year or two, where the tires and fuel used by nascar have no use in the consumer market.

As long as they are USGA conforming balls, I say let the pros play whatever version of a ball they (or their sponsor) want.

Its not like titleist is the only ball winning on the PGA, so you cant say there is a unfair advantage. The pros play the ball that they like and feel suits their game, making everyone play the same ball would probably mess up the players.

There is a lot of chatter about rolling back the ball and the ball goes too far. It would be interesting if the Masters provided balls. Make them spin like balata, have the same flight characteristics and so on. The members could take up a collection and have Titleist or some company build them. Or, buy their own ball manufacturing facility. The players would still come, the balls would have to be solid core, but it would be interesting.

But auto racers do not use the same tires. They use what the driver thinks will preform best for them, much like a golf ball.

Not true in NASCAR, They are issued the tires at the beginning of practice on thurday of Race week. Goodyear brings a new tire design to the race each week and all the teams are issued their tire directly from the GoodYear truck before the practice day on thursday. So Yes in nascar all the drivers use the same (Designed tire) it just changes from week to week and tract to track.
They have to return the unused tires to Good year after the race.

Before every tournament every golfer must shop at golf galaxy to equip their bag, just like the masses.

So many different needs for different players.. The different balls they use are not better just better for them. That would be like saying everyone on tour has to play the S400 iron shaft
