Callaway Big Bertha/Big Bertha Alpha shaft upgrades and charges

Hey all,

Maybe someone knows the answer to this. I currently have an order in with my club for a BBA with stock Fubuki ZT shaft, X flex (requested 70g vs 60g version). That said, I wanted to know what the upcharge may be for other options, specifically, a Graphite Design AD BB 7X, or a new Speeder 757.

I may try the ZT, I have never hit it, but I am a big fan of the 757, I actually like the Matrix 7m3 currently in my RFE, and, just kinda want to try the AD BB (I have a AD DI 7x tipped 1/2" in a G25 8.5 that I bought of the BST...love the feel, but still hit it too high). Someone in the Callawrx2 forum responded to me, stating that the ZT felt smooth and loads nice, which I would like (as the above referenced shafts are a little stout feeling), but fear I will hit it too high.

Thanks all in advance for any replies!

I called Callaway a few days back and they stated that the AD-BB and 757 are not going to be options for this years clubs. They pretty much said the shaft that are listed under the configuration for the X2Hot are the only shafts available this year. Which is a bit disappointing, they really have a poor selection of 70+ gram shafts unless you want a Mitsubishi shaft of some sort. Hope that helps.

That is pretty disappointing I agree. I guess they feel as though the stock shaft will fit the majority of Golfers with the tech in the head to fine tune any possible adjustments that may be needed. But it would have been nice to have some newer options. I see Ping have adopted the Aldila ATX Tour Green and Blue in 75 Gram, and the Fuji 757, and new Kiyoshi Gold too. Even Cobra have added these to their Custom shaft options, so whilst I here Callaways' argument on this, it would have been nice to have more up to date choices.

I totally get it from Cally's perspective, I really do. 90% of golfers will not go through a real fitting (not a local golf shop one, I mean, a real one), and of those 90%, the stock shaft is probably fine for 50% of them. It just makes sense from a mass production perspective. Its just disappointing to those of us that either want a specific feel, or have a specific need.

Not a big deal.....find the shaft you want, get it and an adapter, throw it in, sell the stock one (since Im getting the 70g one, someone may get the 60g and want to try the heavier shaft so it may be easy to get rid of), and be out a little more money. I have an old school 757 sitting around with a TA adapter I can pull off, so that is fine...in fact, the TA might work with the BB (I think it is the same as Optiforce, but not sure, I skipped that generation of cally drivers)

Cally has always been a laggard in custom options for woods. There is a serious lack of 75-85 gram shafts for fairway woods.

I'd say around $200...at least for any high end shaft offerings.

I do agree, the only problem with that is that the total outlay for such an endeavour would be $800, though I suppose that there are a very small proportion that would be happy to totally disregard the financial aspect. They're not the problem though, as those people will always exist. It's the ones that like the Driver, but are perhaps on the brink of buying, but cannot justify the type of outlay that would be needed. It's lost sales. I'm kinda on the fence,as I can see it from Callaways' point of view, but also want all potential customers' to have what they want/need for their games without an unnecessary outlay. Titleist have it right, with their 'off menu' policy. If Titleist can do it, and are happy to do so, I'm not sure why other OEM's can't/wont. Sure I hear their arguments, and they make sense, but as I said, if Titleist can do 'off menu' options, then it rather punches holes in other OEM's argument for not doing it.

As I said, I'm on the fence a little, and can see both arguments on this one.

If you go on Golfsmith and create a custom club, it might give you the prices, I know you can do it for the X2 hot fairways.

Jay 65, Im on our side for sure. I understand it from an OEM/mass sales perspective, but, I think you hit the nail on the head. I think all major OEMs can and do get shafts by the 1000s at a relatively low cost. I imagine that offering, as you put it, "off menu" shafts, would be more costly from the shaft side of things, but would be offset by selling more drivers (I would think...I could be wrong). I cant see the OEMs I understand maybe upcharging REALLY high end stuff (matrix HDs and other $1,000.00 shafts), but for the standard Fuji's, GD's, Mitsu's, Obans, Matrix, Harrison, Adilia, etc., I really cant see this being a money loser. You will sell more drivers if you offer, not just what will appeal to the masses, but the better, more particular player as well.

Im with you. Im not going to pay $700 plus for a driver...that is silly, unless it comes with a guarantee of 350 yard drives, and 10+/14 fairways every round

Looks like I'll be going Kai'li 80x in the BB fairway woods when I do switch.

For the $500 the Alpha costs how about not up charging for the shaft they have listed in configuration
[/quote]

Most of the premium shafts has upcharge cost in BB Alpha driver. I see Kiyoshi White being the most expensive on Callaway's custom shaft list.

Callaway's website is tough to navigate, not much help on custom options and cost.

Any idea if I can get the ZT 70, Tour Green or Blue in 60 or 70 at no additional cost if that is the shaft I want? And any idea of what this "custom" delivery of the club would be?

I think the 75 gram Tour Green would be a FANTASTIC shaft for the BBA. I'm sure it would be a pain to get that accomplished though. They don't even offer the ZT in a 70 gram stiff. I tried the 60 in a X flex and it felt good, but the club overall seemed a touch light and I think the 70 gram in a X would be too much for me. For 500 flipping dollars, I am not going to settle on a shaft. Callaway sort of dropped the ball on this one IMO. More stock offerings and more offerings of their current offerings in different flexes and weights would have been great.

Has anyone been successful at securing pricing from Callaway for shafts? I would like to purchase a Tour Blue 75 for my BBA but Golfsmith had no idea how to get me a quote.
