Golf is classic and timeless.
IMO shorts should never be dramatically above or below the knee.
At the knee or just a above/past is acceptable.
I prefer just above as I have a thing that it bothers me in my stroke when I bend my knees and the shorts grabs/touches my knees when in a "ready to swing" position.

The day guys start showing up to the course in shorts Jerry West or John Stockton would go 'what?' towards, is the day I find a private club with a tasteful dress code ;)

Until then I think we'll survive.

I noticed last year the department stores were showing shorter length shorts. Is this a trend, and will it carry over to golf shorts?

It won't move over to golf - not to worry. It's mostly a higher fashion thing you're seeing on runways and frat guys that go to school in the SEC.

In Sydney golf clubs where they actually enforce a dress code shorts must be just above knee length and tailored. One stuffy club has pic on their website with a pic of non corming shorts which are too short. They look hilarious. All my shorts are golf brand shorts just above knee length. I wouldn't buy shorter length than that no matter what the fashions become.

I wear mine right above the knee. Being that I am 5' 6", this means I need to get every pair of shorts I buy tailored as they are mostly about 2-3" long. I won't be wearing short-shorts, but if I see some shorter shorts on the department store floor this year, maybe I can find a pair that fit me correctly and not have to pay that extra $7 on everything I buy.

Oh ya, now you are supposed to use your spandex shorts underneath it. Makes for double layering and also promotes an athletic look.

Being a shorter guy, I'm really hoping that shorter inseams are will become a trend, or at least offered more frequently. I can get away with 10" inseams, but the 11-12'' inseams that have recently become more standard look absolutely ridiculous on me.

I know I could get shorts altered, but something about having an extra expense for golf shorts to fit properly irritates the hell out of me. I admit that this expense is insignificant, but it's more about the principle (as well as the irritation to have to wait at least a few days to wear them ...).

9-10" are about perfect. 11" is acceptable but getting a bit long. Anything longer is getting into Capri Pant territory.

can't forget the penny loafers.

I wear Nike Dri-Fit golf shorts for golf and just about anything else (black, khaki and stone, I want grays). I feel those are the perfect length and they're great for out on a weekend in hot as sh*t days down here in the summer.

I wear the ABC short from Lululemon. It's a 9" inseam that hits me about 2" above the knee, is a slim fit for a tailored look and is super stretchy given its a warp knit. The only complaint is that they are a touch heavier than woven lightweight stretch shorts, but honestly I don't worry very much about how heavy a short is unless it's an 8 oz cotton short that shows a ton of sweat. You can't go wrong with the LL short.
