Club repair/ making

Recommended Posts

So I've decided that I want to start working on my own clubs and maybe help some friends. When you watch videos online it seems as though everything you would need to get started would be very expensive. I just want to mess around and learn so what are the essentials for regrip, reshaft, etc and where is best place to get them. Again I don't need top of the line. I'm a newbie

It's not expensive at all. I have done most of my own clubwork myself for the last 12 years and I really enjoy it.

Just off the top of my head this will get you started:

Vise - $20 to $30
rubber shaft clamp from Golfworks - $2
utility knife with hook blades - $5
golf shaft epoxy - 24 hour cure for irons and woods - $10
Tour set epoxy (30/60) for quick jobs - $10
Metal bristle brush to clean out hosels - $5(?)
Acetone to clean hosels or strip paint - $7
Mineral spirits to install grips - $7
Smaller flat head screwdriver for scraping epoxy out of hosels - $2
Grip tape - $8
Propane torch - $20(?)
Pipe cutter (for cutting steel shafts) - $7
Hacksaw for cutting graphite shafts - $5 to $10

Those tools will get you started for things like regripping and doing shaft work. You might already have some of this stuff on hand.

I don't pull graphite shafts since I don't have a shaft extractor. If you think you'd do a lot of graphite work you will need a shaft extractor and a heat gun. Personally, I just take my woods to Golf Galaxy and have the guy there pull them for $5 if I need it. But I don't need much graphite work done so it's not needed very often.

On top of that you will need job specific items like ferrules, lead tip weights, grips, etc.

Hey thanks! Not bad at all. I've got an old wedge soaking in coke as my first project but my step son says he wants to start playing golf but he will usually say something like that then never do it so it got me thinking, what if instead of buying him clubs I took an old custom set of my dads and just re did them with shafts, grips, color fill and made them look cool if maybe he would 1) like them more but 2) I learn how to fix my own stuff. Thanks again!

I recently was in the same boat as you. I actually was able to get everything I needed for rather cheap. You just have to figure out what exactly you are hoping to accomplish and what you will HAVE to have to do it. It's a good feeling being able to do most of your own club work! Good luck

Just so you know. There are several tools you may already have which can be used for certain aspects of club making. Some things have to be golf specific and some don't. For example, I use my dremel with small sanding heads to clean out hosels. It works perfectly. Your going to enjoy working on your clubs. It's fun, good luck.

Golfworks tends to be where I go if I need something that can't be purchased second hand. Other than that, enjoy! All I had to start with was grip tape, solvent and epoxy. The rest just accumulates as you start to play with different clubs/parts. Even with a minimalist approach, I still enjoy tinkering.

Welcome to the hobby!! I've been building clubs for the better part of a decade now. Depending on what you want to do really makes a difference. I've learned what I can and can't accomplish at home. I probably burned 1000's of dollars in graphite shafts before finally buying an extractor that would have saved me all that money. A lot of things can be done by hand but with putting some cash in the proper tools things can be much easier! Start small with a vice and some grip tape!! Then work your way up as you feel more comfortable!

I started with re-gripping and just now did my first shaft today.
I learned re-gripping a long time ago, and my set up is great. (1) Good metal sided, rubber shaft clamp (1) Brampton solvent (1) Quality grip tape (1) Hook Blades, razor blades, and knife.

For me it was easy to learn re-gripping first, then move onto shaft work.

Golfworks sell a no-frills swing weight scale under $50. I bought a simple (but well made) shaft extractor on eBay for $80.

You can pull steel shafts easily enough but for graphite it’s a gamble without a shaft puller.
