It's not just golf, it's spending time with people close to my heart in a beautiful setting.
Ironically, its also a chance to get away from people that are close to your heart.

Im not a rich man. I have a good job that pays the bills. I have a great wife and great kids who are grown and given my great grand kids. I don't think I've missed out on anything because of golf. I watch it on TV, I have a great net setup in the garage with a simulator I use in the winter. I have a membership in the summer and play as often as I can and my wife doesn't mind.

I was about to hit the post button but after I read it again I need to do an edit:

I am a rich man.

If I didnt have golf - I'd probably be engulfed into illegal seedy 8mm-type snuff films or be one of those creepy-grown-men My Little Pony worshipping Bronies (google it and thank me later).

So yes, it's totally worth it.

I think my autobiography would be titled, " A Life Misspent in Golf." Life is too short to spend it trying to make a ton of money, so you can retire, stay healthy, and live long enough to play golf decades in the future. My motto has been, "Work to live, not Live to work."

Remember, "There's no U-Hauls following behind a hearse."

For me its the chance to put up or shut up. Playing on team format sports in high school, I was one to blame others on their lack of effort or just coming up short when it counted. Golf is about you, how you prepare, how you are mentally, how you do under pressure, how you bounce back from a bogey or double bogey. Its all that and a bag of tricks. The time element is never and issue because you have to satisfy one's self before others. Its not about spending less time on those who are important to you. Like they say on the airplane when the mask drops down from the ceiling. Put your mask on first then help those around you put theirs on. Okay that was out of left field but so true. Imagine how much time we sit in our cars or sit in front of the television or do other things. It depends how important it is to you. We are all running a race. Some run it at marathon speed while others are on cruise control. Any chance I get to hit the links or go to the range and work on somethings that is a perfect time spent.

Worth it. You'll discover more about a person's character in 18 holes of golf than you would ever discover in a lifetime of conversation. Even if that person is yourself. I love this game.

What are your opportunity costs of time spent with golf? From time spent: learning, practicing, playing, researching, traveling, teaching, buying, selling, watching, volunteering, writing, joining, thinking, etc...?

Was it truly worth the forgone oppurtunities?
As a former economics teacher, I love this question.

The cost is time with my wife, which I actually consider another benefit of golf.

Golf is worth it, everyone needs time and space to decompress

A beautiful course on a sunny day with good friends and a frosty one after the round is a stress reliever

There are a lot worse things you could do in your leisure time

Truer words were never spoken. If you want to see what a persons true nature is just play a round of golf with him. Nothing puts a persons true character on display like a round of golf. If your playing partner can walk up on the first tee with a smile and maintain it through a tough round of golf and still be smiling at the end, this is the guy I want to hang around with.

I have met some of the most untrustworthy, dispicable people on the golf course that played the game with a smile on their face and and adhered to the rules. I have also met some of the most sincere, caring and admirable people that have used a foot wedge, slammed a club, or use a four letter expletive to describe one of their shots. Golf is a game/sport with rules (all of which I adhere to, with dresscode). But to make it some oracle-buddha-soul seeing entity is a little much.

HaHa, I spend all day doing OCs, I don't do it for my leisure time activities.

Hands down though, yep, it's worth it and then some.

Forget all the practice, dollars spent and highs and lows of the game-

Just the people that I've been lucky enough to meet, play with and befriend is incredible to me-

I'm 53yo and if I never picked up another club, I've got memories for a life time.

And just a fairly recent addition to my life from the game, this and another forum-

Specifically, all of you guys and a few gals-

You don't realize it, though you've helped me through some pretty trying times-

Threads like this take my mind off of what I'm presently going through-

So yea, absolutely, it's worth it-

I really owe the people that I've played with and you guys/gals-

Thanks :)

Great topic

Sure I have missed opportunities in life while playing golf or practicing, but ive also missed opportunities at life while working or eating lunch.

We can turn the OPs question on its head and ask what kinds of opportunities has golf given to you?

No matter what it is you decide to do in any given moment there is always an opportunity cost associated with it. All that really matters is are you happy with your choice.

Enough Philosophy for the day. I think I have gotten as much from the game as it has given to me.

I'm curious what the OP might be getting at, there must be some premise here.

About 2006 I was introduced to a mortgage broker who was helping me see what I could qualify for. Since I was in grad school out here I missed the great real estate boom that led every real estate agent in Arizona to think themselves the next Donald Trump. I lost out on potentially tens of thousands of dollars in earnings because I just didn't get in the game soon enough....I didn't have the GUTS to do it as Tom Vu would say (if you're under 30 just youtube search that name and enjoy).

I was lamenting all of this to the mortgage broker as he grinned and said, "Yeah, yeah, yeah and if I'd listened to my brother in 1986 and invested in Microsoft I wouldn't be sitting here...let's continue."

What is hurting golf in our area is Time and Money?

It is an expensive game and takes 4 or 5 hours to play. Golf courses all around us are looking for members.

I played a bunch of golf when I was 13 to 16 years old. Then came work and university. Then came wife and kids. Kids activities and family vacations came first.

Probably averaged 5 or 6 rounds a year from age 25 to 45.

From age 45 to 49 averaged 10 to 15 rounds (kids older and more independent).

Last year I joined a club. Played 70 times. Was awesome. Can finally afford it and have the time for it!

Golf used to be worth it, then it wasn't and now it's getting to be worth it again. I lost a girl I wanted to marry because her dad was golf mad and she didn't want to end up like her mom, because she knew I loved the game too. She thought playing twice a week was too much and she left. So golf sucked for a long time. But now I'm back at it seriously again, and I sacrifice stuff now to play, and I have it great, so definitely worth it in the long run!
