MG Tour C4 2014

The Pearl

Recommended Posts

I have periodically pimped this ball on this forum. Just returned from a golfing excursion to Florida and took a couple of dozen of the new version for my buddies to play also. As with the earlier editions, this is the real deal, a 3 piece urethane, tour level ball. Long and soft and spins like a top around the green.

$20 bucks a dozen from their web site.

Without a question, this is the single best ball value in the marketplace.

I would love a yellow version, but according to customer service, it is not in the cards.

I have a couple dozen of these next to me right now. Haven't tried them out as of yet. Really liked last years and the earlier version.

Given the hype machine for the Gamer, the Duo, and now the SuperSoft, it is amazing, given the savvy nature of WRX crowd, that this ball has not created a brush fire.

May give these a try too along with the Project A golf balls this spring. Just bought two more gloves from MG, they do make an outstanding glove.

I played the new Tour C4 today. Distance was the same as the Project (a) I have been playing. Around the greens I was getting more spin, as well as a softer feel. I have never been one to comment about putting differences with a ball, but I guess I have developed a little feel. The C4 is the clear winner with putting. It seems to get rolling quicker and not skipping at all. I lasered in some long putts today. These putts started on my line and just stuck to them like they had downforce.
Just like a ProV1, I can get too much spin off 9, PW, UM and LW if I have not careful. I just have to adjust and not be so aggressive and everything is fine.

I beat a few of them before my round out of a practice bunker. Two of the four showed some scuffs from some VERY aggressive blasts. While in play I scuffed a few with full shots, but it was nothing that would take the ball out of play.

I use them in the winter. They are as good or better than any other ball I have tried under $35.00. So at $20/dz they are a great buy. Very good distance and predictable spin. Decent durability. They are pretty soft even in cool weather. In the hot summer they might be a little too soft but for what I use them for they are perfect. If premium Callaway's and Srixon's continue to go up in price I could easily see switching to them year around.

Been playin em for a couple of years now, IMHO best ball on the market and their cheap too! The cover on the 2014 version seems to be more durable but for me the performance stayed the same.

  • 1 month later...

Gloves and balls showed up. Very impressed with the glove, especially for the price. Unfortunately I ordered a half size too small so back they go to exchange. The balls passed the fingernail test and the cover feels sticky. Reminds me of the fg tour or Maxfli u4. I'm playing 2 rounds this weekend. Will report back with results.

I played this ball for about 2 seasons (maybe 2-3 years ago)
At that time, I think they had more dimples, & I quit playing them as they spun too much for me & couldn't keep them on the course
(Which is the same problem with a Pro-V1)
I have been playing Pro-V1x's since, & always searching for a "new" ball to play to jump off the bandwagon..
I see the C-4 is now down to 332 dimples (Pro-V1x's are now at 328 IIRC)
So can anyone make a fair comparison 2014 C4 Vs. 2014 Pro-V1x?
I don't need to know about the feel, or durability.. I already know the C4 has them both...

Well, I just played this ball for two rounds this weekend and as promised am coming back with some results.

Simply put, I'd say these are easily the best $20/dozen balls I've ever played. Mainstream OEM's could charge a much higher premium for these and people would buy them. I can't say they did any one thing amazing but they did everything very well. It's like that work horse club in your bag that you'll never let go of because you know it may not be the prettiest or the most expensive, but it'll get the job done every time. I'd place these pretty close to the Maxfli U4, and that is a compliment.

They feel great off of every club I struck them with and all though they weren't as soft as say a FG Tour they did feel plenty soft. They did not overly spin off the driver but were not quite as straight as a U4/x or XV. However they did hold their line quite well in the wind and would respond well to the swing that you put on it.

They felt great off the irons and I had no problem pulling the short irons back about a foot or two and I did not have to worry about the long irons rolling off the greens. Just a very predictable spin.

Wedge shots were easy to manipulate. Bump and runs, no problem. Flops, no problems. Low checks, no problem. Absolutely compliant around the greens.

Putting is probably where I liked them the most. They felt very nice off the putter and were not clicky or mushy. They were warm porridge and kept on their line nicely.

Durability was tops. I usually put some gills on a ball at least once a round but these withstood all my wedge shots and I did drive one on to the goat path with not a scratch to show for it. Zstar yellow durability? Probably not. But plenty good enough to top many others.

I guess what I liked most about them is that they were so boringly predictable. They did everything so well that it took no time to get used to them. There was not the typical break in period where I'm trying to figure out what I could and couldn't do with them. I just put them in to play and they were like an old friend. This ball is truly a jack of all trades and master of none. And at $20/dozen, that's not a bad thing.

I played this ball again today. I am convinced by its performance and will only buy/play this ball once my back-stock of other balls is gone. I am not losing any distance compared to a few distance balls I play. I am not getting too much spin with scoring irons, which I tend to get. The durability today was amazing. I played one ball from #2 until the end of the round, which included a topped 3w into a cart path. I hit some very aggressive wedge shots and didn't get an gill marks. I was crushing my 19° hybrid today off the tee and it never ballooned, even into the wind. Just a nice medium trajectory across all clubs. I've really found a ball that fits my game.

I have been working on my putting recently and it has improved. I will say it again though, these balls putt amazingly well. The best ball I have ever putted with. They just seem to stick to lines so much better.

I am going to play the new ProV1 tomorrow and see how it compares.
