Use Iron Covers, Yay or Nay Stina Sternberg says Nay

Recommended Posts

Ok, Stina "GolfDigest" Sternberg says, and I quote "Nay, A really big nay. They are pace-of-play killers, easy to lose and let's face it, dorky".

I buy my own clubs and have since I was 14 years old. I am not married to a Golf Digest "Princess". In fact nobody buys or gives me clubs.

My AP1's 6-PW, Suggested Retail Price cost $840. My 913 Woods 1,3,5 & H with custom fit shafts, SRP cost $2836. The Vokey SM4 wedges, SRP cost $417 and my Scotty Cameron, Golow, SRP cost $349.

All said and done, just the clubs alone, mind you, Retail cost $4442.00.

This does not include tax, head covers, cart bag, fitter fees, adapters for the 913 Fairways. My point is, I have just enough iron in my $200+ Titleist cart bag to destroy everything else in it if I don't want to be a dork.

I can slip my iron club cover off and on and have it safe in my back pocket before the butt end of the grip clears the top of the bag. No loss of pace there. Just a lumpy butt for a few minutes while the flat leather cover is hiding in my pocket

The carts at my home course are not Rolls Royces. They are more like lawn tractors. They bounce all over the place especially when you are keeping pace. This says nothing of the bag wear and tear caused by un-covered irons riding around in the back of your Escalade that also rides like a lawn tractor.

Until Titleist or some Princess from Golf Digest or anywhere else decides they want to buy me new custom fitted clubs every year, I say Yay to head covers and nay to dumb, financially irresponsible dorks.

I'm no fan of her column, but in fairness, she did suggest getting a bag with dividers. It's not like she had zero sympathy for those who want to keep their clubs in great shape. The pace of play argument is admittedly silly, but some people just see iron covers as being over protective of a tool that we repeatedly smash into the ground.

With all due respect (yes, I am quoting Ricky Bobby ...), iron covers are dorky. Irons are meant to be used. They are not your "good china and silverware" that is used at Thanksgiving and Christmas. They are meant to be repeatedly swung into the ground at 50-100 mph, ripping through the turf and sending a solid thermoplastic orb into the distance. Sure, you may have some cash invested in your bag, so show it off. Get some battle scars. Your irons and game will thank you for it.

Yes. You use covers for just about all of the other clubs in the bag. And besides, I've never had anyone say I'm dumb for using iron covers because I like to take care of my clubs. I see both sides to iron covers, if you have the ability to not care that your irons get dinged up, then more power to you but my OCD and attention to detail wouldn't let me do that to my irons.

I've never slowed anyone down with my iron covers. I takes my friend more time to pull out his range finder or my other friend to take 6 practice swings than it does for me to slide the cover off as I walk to my ball, hit it and slide it back on after a quick wipe with a towel as I walk back to my bag. I've never lost one in 15 yrs of using them either. I don't buy it slows you down or they are easy to lose. Now dorky ? Maybe..But I see enough dorky dressers out there and posers to grab the attention away from my dorky iron covers.

Haha they are a little dorky, but who cares? We're golfers. My gf and friends already think I'm dorky for playing golf in the first place. Let's not kid ourselves into thinking that we are protecting our image by not using iron covers.

I say nay if you are not using forged irons. Woods however are an absolute must.

They are most certainly dorky and people may not say that to you, but they are thinking it. With that being said, who cares? If un-scarred clubs make you happy, then so be it.

For me personally, I don't like them. There are only 2 clubs that I want to appear perfect from address, my driver's top line and my putter. Hell, I used rusted up Vokey oil can wedges so obviously appearance means little. But hey, when I look down at that club, I feel comfortable and at ease. It's all about what makes you the MOST comfortable out on the course IMHO. :)

Would never play a round with 90% of you it sounds like. I have two rules in life:

1. Never trust a vegetarian
2. Never play golf with someone who uses iron covers

I don't understand the notion of messing up your "custom fit" clubs. You are more likely to scratch your club making a swing than bouncing in a golf cart. Your custom fit club gets messed up from repeated mashing into the ground, causing loft and lie to change, not because it has a minor scratch.

Covers for storage and travel. Not for play during a round. Especially if used by people who pose after they hit, talk with their buddies, look for their cigarette then walk back to their bag, then talk again, then fumble with it.

I use them only when my clubs are riding in the back of my SUV because I hate hearing them rattle around while I'm driving. They also help reduce on chatter marks on the forged irons on bumpy roads.

I use them for travel, airline and trunk to course. As I play, I take the iron cover off and put it into a pocket of my golf bag, in order that I play each iron. At the end of the round, I put them back on before I put the clubs in the car. I get the feeling it's just a matter of time before I lose one though.

First I saw of Iron covers was in the mid or late nineties. That was in the age of stainless dominance and I doubt they sold as little more than gew gaws, a sort of bag bling. They pretty much grew in importance as people in general began believing there was an advantage to be had in soft forged irons. People didn't want their rather expensive soft forged irons marked up in travel and were even reluctant to use them in sand traps that had any pebbles mixed in the sand.

I'll admit to being attracted to the bag bling and bought several sets back then but balked at the business of putting them on and off when playing even if it was the caddy doing all of that. Besides, I was playing stainless clubs so their need was not existent for me. I was also spending all my free time on the range or on the fairways in my quest to become the best golfer in the world so my clubs got so used up that selling them became a foolish idea. I took them off and kept them off.

These days I have some soft forged clubs and no longer spend all that much time on the fairways or the range. I looked for and found those covers and, more or less about twenty years after I bought them, am now using them on my soft forged clubs. However I take them off when I get to the fairways and put them back on when I am finished for the day.

If you're going to ram your irons into a rock hard plastic orb and/or the ground at 80mph a few thousand times...there is no headcover in the world that will save them. It's akin to driving your jeep off-road but then making sure to vaccum your food out of the seats when you get back home.

Why not save the 10 minutes a round that you spend messing with your clubhead covers doing something (anything) more productive with your day??? Great thanks!
