5 Lessons Pivot Diagram Question

So I was reading Power Golf and then Five Lessons and I came across one of those famous drawings that

got my little tail wagging and then I realized that I wasn't quite sure what the diagram actually meant.

You know the one...the picture about the pivot:

Where I am confused is what the bottom ellipse (hips) pivots on. It's not pivoting off the center of it's shape, but it's actually pivoting off what would be the left side/hip of the golfer. I don't think anyone can argue that Hogan was relatively centered in his swing and he definitely got to his left side pretty early during transition and then just turned. Do you think the picture was an accident...or was he trying to tell us that you use the left hip as the main pivot point of the swing? I would say a guy that uses his front side as a pivot point as well is someone like David Duval when he was porking it in his prime. Take a guy on the other end of the spectrum like Curtis Strange....who very clearly established a pivot point onto his right leg and then had to establish a pivot point to his left side as he came down. Just wanted to know what you guys thought about that.

At this point in time, I don't think he was sliding as much (if at all) like we all thing of his COG shift. His left leg was mangled right after the book came out, so maybe he felt a purely left side pivot point. Don't forget, preaccident/post secret Hogan is where (one of the places) Slice got his reverse K idea from.

I posted DTL and FO of hogan from power golf. That was in 1948 probably right around the time of his secret the pics were taken. Most likely just before. You can tell because his grip was just a bit stronger. Beautiful move and def not as 'stacked' as his swing after the accident. You can definitely see the changes.

I find it curious that his left leg being damaged he went to a pivot/anchoring method that emphasized his left side more. I'd have thought if his left leg/side was porked up he'd be more of a right leg leaner and have to play with what he had from back there.

well that's one controversial diagram. I cannot say one way or the other, but if he pivots around the left leg, where does his secondary tilt come from? I have a torn ACL in my left leg and wouldn't dare load onto it. I just don't see the ability that he could use his left leg more post accident.

Base on those diagrams his pivot point seems to be his left shoulder. The diagrams don't show a reverse pivot because left shoulder not in front of left hip?

To see it properly we'de need an overhead shot. I don't think I've ever seen any overhead shot of Hogan.

He does have quite a lot of lateral in his downswing and hits it hard with everything...especially his big butt. I think that creates plenty of secondary axis tilt.

The graphs have no origin, so it is difficult to interpret them. The intersection of the center-lines is somewhat meaningless, because it is affected by the placement of the shoulders-ellipse above the hips-ellipse (it is not supposed to represent an actual overhead view). The funny business in the combined graphs could be caused by the shoulders pivot (upper spine) moving towards the target, I am not convinced that it can be attributed to the position of the hips pivot.

I've wondered about this too. Take a look at the drawings on page 122 of 5L. There is a little hips shoulders drawing that shows more centered. Curious that its just sitting there and different. Plus the drawing of him swinging under the hips/shoulders on page 122 seems to be more centered and even right sided as compared to the swinging drawing on page 73. His nose is practically over his right knee on page 122. If you trace the outside of his right leg that is about 80 degrees on page 122, when he is loaded at the top, the line hits him to the left of his head around left shoulder. The same line traced on page 73 hits him in the nose. Probably meaningless, but fun for a Mr. Hogan junkie to ponder.

I just remembered that Mark Evershed did a video inspired by the same diagram. In the above he seems to put a lot of emphasis on the left shoulder joint in his analysis of it.

Watched some of his videos. He's not bad. But I think he's too focused on being a front anchor guy. Not everyone is going to be built that way.
