TaylorMade Tour Preferred balls. Worthy?

Brian Kwiatkowski

Recommended Posts

I was walking around Wal-mart today waiting for my prescription to be filled and I noticed the new TM Tour Preferred balls in the golf section. I assume they're a 5-piece successor to the Lethal balls. Anyone try these balls yet? I currently play Penta TP5s, and I still have 3 cartons left. If anyone thinks they're a worthy successor to my TP5s I'll spring the $45 for a dozen. Just curious if anyone played them yet. It may be too early, it looks like these just came out very recently. Thx...

Much like the Penta, TP5, and Lethal that has preceded them in the past few years they play wonderfully all around, just as good as the ProVs. The only things from keeping me form buying the new TPs are how well the Lethals still play for how little you can find them for.

Haiku as a sig?
They may be overrated
But I'm rocking one!

The great thing about TM balls is last year's version (Lethal) at about $25-30 a dozen most places and is just as good as the newer model (Tour Preferred) at $46 a dozen. And yes the Tour Preferred was just released March 1st.

Exactly. My club is getting ready to open for the season and doesn't want last years stock hanging around. I saw them, asked, and got the last 9 doz for $175 or $19/dz. I'm sure the new TPs are going to play fine but the Lethals at that price are stupid good. Any cheaper and I'll sign my birdie balls and toss them to people on the course like a Professional.

Damn, at $19 / $175 you scored BIG!!! I would have opened my wallet as fast as you did.

It would not be physically possible for the Tour Preferred to play enough better than the Lethal to justify $45/dozen instead of $20/dozen. And I say that as someone who tends to average losing a ball per round or so.

But the Tour Preferred will no doubt be an excellent ball this time next year for $25/dozen!

I can tell you this... If you are looking for more approach or green side spin, TP and TPx or going to give you that, compared to Lethal.

Also, on Trackman, both TP balls gave me 2-3 mph more ball speed off the driver... That's a ton.

Finally, if you are like me, and could use a bit more spin with your mid to short irons, TP (non X) is a game changer... Well worth the "price of admission," in my opinion.

There have been some extensive reviews on this site showing very little, if any performance gain over the Lethal. YMMV.

I still have two doz. Lethal and have no reason to switch...unless the Callaway SR-2 is flat-out awesome.

I'm guessing, to date, I've spent more time testing Lethal, TP, TPx and SR2 on Trackman than most anyone here. I promise that for my 96-98 mph driver swing speed, that what I posted above and in several other threads is dead accurate.

Also, SR2, for me, CRUSHED Lethal in every category... Longer and lower spinning off the driver (1-2 mph more ball speed); higher launching and longer carry off long and mid irons; higher spin and more control with wedges; and significantly more green side and bunker spin... Not to mention a slightly softer feel.

It may sound like I hate Lethal, far from it... Last year it was the only ball I played. Simple fact is, FOR ME, there are much better choices this year, two being TP and SR2. Would I throw your Lethals in the garbage, or pass on the sweet bargains, nope... I'm just sharing my experience with my extensive ball testing this year.

Solid deal! Loved the Lethal and am really liking the TPx so far just as much if not a little more.
