Ping Scottsdale TR Adjustable Shea....missing screw....what to do?

Found one at local shop for what I thought was a good deal. Well I didn't pay attention in the shop and I get it home and notice it doesn't have the screw to adjust it. The screw is missing.

Well when the screw is missing, it is locked in that position.....you would think it would move freely.

So 2 questions.....how can I get a screw?

and

I also don't have a wrench.....so what can I use instead?

Thanks

There is no screw. Just the tool that threads into the collar when you want to adjust the length. The tool opens the collar slightly allowing the length to be changed. Once the tool is removed the collar closes back down to grip the shaft and keep it from moving. I am not sure what the exact thread is other than that I am fairly certain it is a non-metric thread. You can take the putter to any well stocked hardware store and find the correct thread by trial and error. You just need a hex head screw of the correct diameter and thread. Make sure it is long enough to reach through the collar to the other side with maybe 1/2" to spare. Then it is simple to use a hex tool to make your adjustments. Once the screw makes contact with the other side of the collar only an additional 1/2 turn or so is needed to open the collar enough to make the adjustment.

Why not just go back to the golf shop tomorrow and tell them they forgot to give you the wrench?

Thanks for the reply. So there isn't a screw? Interesting. So the tool has threads on it?

I guess the best thing to do is find a tool.

Or i can do like you said and find a screw at a hardwear store and use it as a "Key" and i can adjust it with the correct allen wrench.

It is a used club, it didn't come with the tool. Plus that retailer doesn't even carry Ping.

  • 9 months later...

I know this is an older post but I just recently came across this issue and thought I would share my solution in case anyone else comes here searching for an answer.

While it looks like there should be a screw in the adjustment hole where the Ping Tool would go, there is no screw. The Ping Adjustment Tool itself actually acts as a screw to separate the clamp. I think the common misconception here is that the tool is used to separate the clamp on the grip instead of tightening it.

That being said I was able to find an screw laying around with the same thread as the hole on the grip and then used an allen wrench to tighten the screw and separate the clamp. After that I was able to move it around freely.

Hope this helps!

  • 4 years later...

I know this post is over 4 years old, but i purchased a used Ping Grayhawk TR adjustable putter this week, and no adjustment tool. I had owned one before which included the adjustment tool.

I went to Lowe's hardware and one of their guys helped my find a simple solution. We used a 1/4 in Phillips head screw and carefully threaded it right into the adjustment hole, using a simple screwdriver. Made the shaft and grip adjustment, then un-threaded the screw. Worked just fine.
