Public Course most similar to Augusta

Kind of intrested in everyones responses. Name a course thats similar to Augusta National and why you feel its similar.

Oh and don't include the tour18/replica courses.

Closest I've seen is Mt.Village Plantation in South Carolina

None. Sorry. Just impossible to compare. I'll say there's some private courses that are comparable. I think that Muirfield (Nicklaus) is comparable in design and condition, but not many others compare.

Shadow Creek in terms of maintenance/visual effect.

I believe that when Fazio designed Rolling Oaks at World Woods it was with Augusta in mind.

I'd say Dancing Rabbit in Philadelphia Mississippi. There's two courses owned by the Choctaw Indians. It's a resort with a casino as I have heard numerous times that's it's a mini Augusta.

Maybe Forest Dunes in Michigan, especially the front nine. Similar large scale open feel with tree lined fairways. Nothing really like Augusta but for the best Mackenzie course many say it's Royal Melbourne West in Australia which is playable by non-members.

Pasatiempo here has some elements that remind me of Augusta...for obvious reasons.

99% sure that Pine Barrens is a tribute to PV and he is right, Rolling Oaks is Augusta inspired.

Pine Barrens is Pine Valley like having played both, greens not as difficult as Pine Valley. Rolling Oaks more so Augusta, but not as much elevation change.

Tom Fazio also did White Columns outside Atlanta. I played it when it was public. It was billed as Augusta like with its trees and elevation changes. I think it is now private. Pretty awesome place.

Similar in what areas? While its never up to the same condition, Forest Hills in Augusta has a very similar feel. An old tree lined Ross course along a rolling pine filled piece of land, Forest Hills provides the same sense.

Nothing compares to Augusta but the closest I've played only has to do with a few things such as bunkering and suttle visual cues, and that is Pasatiempo. Shadow Creek is a beautiful place, but overall look and feel is nothing like Augusta.

There used to be advertising galore where Dancing Rabbit (the Azaleas course) is called "the Augusta you can play". That advertising disappeared probably due to a series of phone calls and / or letters from lawyers out of Georgia.

I played there two years ago in a driving rain storm and really can't say one way or the other about the course other than to say I've played it.

I know it isn't public but isn't Sage Valley very similar to Augusta?

The closest comparison I can come up with is the Ritz Carlton in Orlando. Beautifully manicured, no rough and really tough green complexes.

TBD - You are 100% correct.

P.S. - ANCC may have been the inspiration for Rolling Oaks, but it is not even a close approximation. I can't think of anywhere I've ever played that reminds me of ANCC.

The closest I can think of are three courses at Reynolds Plantation, National, Great Waters, and Oconee. Maybe Mid-South in Pinehurst?

Pasatiempo. You won't get Augusta length, but you will get undulating fairways, elevation changes, heavily tiered greens, small greens, and MacKenzie bunkering.

I don't think we can find any public course that are somewhat close to Augusta. Private courses, maybe yes!

World woods rolling oaks is pretty similar in the greens. My first tournament ever was there and I had 42 putts....they have so many angles and tiers it's unbelievable.

I would agree nothing truly compares. I thought that Caledonia golf course was reported to have some similar aspects. Having played Caledonia it is a great course but not sure how people compare it to Augusta.

I would have to agree, there are some holes that give me a very similar feel with the crazy greens and the perfectly manicured conditions, the 10th hole comes to mind

Play there often, it's 45 min from the house, may play there Mon if the weather is decent. My college roommate interned there one summer and flipped the fairway mower crossing the bridge on 18, almost killed him! It and WWOG Rolling Oaks are the two closest visually that I've played that compare to Augusta.

In terms of look and feel there is a small state park in south Georgia called Little Ocmulgee State Park that has a golf course that has several holes that feel and have a similar look to Augusta. Not hilly, not quite as many azaleas, but several massive pines and a well maintained golf course.

Something else? Back in the day $32 got you an all day pass where you could play from sun up to sun down for the low price of $32.

I know the pros like playing Redstone before the Masters because of the similarities in conditions and design. I think it's more with the green complexes. I played Pasatiempo a few days ago and could see a few parallels for sure, although some of the severe forced carries are distinct.

In Augusta, there is a Public course called Forest Hills. It kinda has the Augusta National feel (obviously not as pristine). It is a very hilly course.

In terms of the number of Azaleas, I nominate Baywood Greens in Delaware. It sort of claims that it is the areas Augusta.

Pine Barrens is a tribute to Pine Valley. Rolling Oaks is a tribute to Augusta. It has some familiar features, but just really can't compare.

As far as the drive-in goes....check out Caledonia Golf & Fish Club at Pawleys Island. The course is nothing like Augusta, but it's awesome. And the drive in with the overhanging oaks is very similar and beautiful.
