Club insurance for a single trip

Recommended Posts

After going on many golf trips and setting for bringing my back up putter I am considering bringing my Scotty Cameron prototype (which is my everyday gamer I got from a friend on tour). The putter, although given to me for free, is worth about $2,000. I am a bit paranoid that it will get damaged or lost on my upcoming trip to Pebble. Has anyone had experience with purchasing club insurance for a single trip? I would really appreciate any help.

Your home/renters's policy should be able to add on a rider for that particular club I would think possibly short-term.

But...if the club is that valuable, and you use it daily I'd want a rider on it all the time anyway. I have a rider on all my golf equipment (even though we are covered for several thousand with our usual policy, with a deductable).

That rider covers virtually no deductible, includes breakage, and won't affect our general household policy if I should have a claim. I update my equipment annually with the broker (on the spreadsheet I keep) and if I should have a claim on something I bought between updates, no prob with a receipt. And since we pay our policy monthly over the year, I just look at it as part of my monthly golf budget for piece of mind.

When flying to the Dominican Rep. on JetBlue, I asked the lady at the counter how much insurance would be. She had no idea if they even offer it and assured me they wouldn't lose or break my clubs. Tried talking with her for a few minutes about wanting something to make sure if they were damaged, I wouldn't be SOL but that didn't get anywhere.

Not that this always happens but you may want to check the airline website and bring details you find along when flying to avoid what happened to me.

I'm more worried about theft once the clubs get off the plane. That's why I added the rider, though it covers breakage too. Of course a great travel bag/case is also extra "insurance"- lots of opinions on the best for that on here.

Ship them FedEx. I did for the first time on a trip last year, and they build insurance coverage into the price.

I have a added specific "golf equipment" policy on my clubs (similar to a wedding ring, etc.). It is tied into my HO insurance

I think its only like an additional $30 a year.

I did that once on UPS. Once! It cost me $200 return. Nice to not have to lug them through the airport, but...$200 is a fair chunk of change.

I had mine shipped from NY to California. $95 each way. Ground shipping, 5-7 days though. You just gotta plan ahead is all. But yeah, I can see your argument if you need to get it there in only a couple of days.

If you don't want to lose it or don't want to damage it, don't travel with it, period. That said, if properly packed, you are fine. I've been all over the world with golf clubs, and the most damage I've ever seen was a broken/bent stand bag. If you get a hard case, you're pretty much assured that you'll have no damage.
