Member Guest & Caddie Tips

I am joining a family member in a couple weeks for a member guest. I was fortunate enough to be invited last year to the same tournament, and was surprised by a caddie joining us for the tournament - therefore I did not tip the caddie, but the member did for both of us.

 

I would like to take care of the caddie this time, but I don't know how much to tip, it will be 4 rounds in total, looping two bags (one for the member, one for me). How do I find out how much to tip our guy without insulting the member - and should I even try to offer.

Do you know how much the member tipped last time? Divide that by two.

If you've been invited twice in a row, I have serious doubts that this member, who is also family, would take offense to being asked "hey, how much should I tip him?" If anything, you're more likely to irk the guy by not splitting the tip for two MGs in a row.

I would hope that the member wants his caddie (especially if it's one who caddies for him often) to be taken care of. Don't be afraid to ask what is a good tip. Don't be afraid to ask the caddie, too, if you're comfortable with him and think he'll be honest about it. If not, I'm sure there's a caddie master who can let you know what is appropriate.

Normally the member handles all expenses.

I think its cool to ask the member if you could handle the tip. It shows how much you appreciate the invite. Tips are different depending on course and area of the country. Ask the member what he suggests.

I work at a prestigious country club in New England, where a majority of the members use caddies. Their normal tip is 20-25 bucks, on top of the fee they get through the golf course.

Please check with the member. My club is a no tipping property, should you wish to take care of the caddy, find out the rate from the caddie master. Very often the member chooses to double the rate for a member guest tournament if they are permitted to request a caddy of their choice, my club is assigned caddies. Members know the system and accept it, they are all excellent full-time caddies.
