Poor Putting - thinking of changing grip size

Recommended Posts

Hey guys

Thinking of going for a slightly wider grip. I am feeling as though my hands are coming more and more into my putting stroke.

I've had a bad year on the greens, handicap risen from 1 to 2 and average putts in the 30's week in and week out.

I put lots of work in on the greens but my lags are poor and 10 feet in is very inconsistent.

I may add that I suffer from chipping problems also so that may give you an idea of my struggles

Anyone had any similar issues and found a wider grip has helped?

Was thinking of giving a superstroke a try

Cheers

If you think you're getting handsy a wider grip would probably help. As much as they take the hands out of the stroke the non-tapered design also takes the tension out of the wrists and forearms, which is why I like them. I've used the Super Stroke Mid-Slim 2.0 but also like the Winn ProX 1.18. They're pretty close in size and both are non-tapered. I think the Winn is a little softer and adds a little more feel. They're both in the 50 to 54g range.

You really have to go to a golf shop and see what size you like. If it's too wide it's like holding on to a tree trunk, so you just have to check out the various sizes.

It's a cheap science project for sure.

I switched to a mid sized grip on my Anser2 a few years ago, I've been putting lights out. (that said, I'll probably 3 jack the course tomorrow). I doubt I'll ever go back to a normal grip.

Now when I grab a skinny putter, it feels strange.

Go for it.

Watch the weight of whatever you add too, as the head may feel lighter without adding headweight and compound any distance issues.

Superstrokes seemed too dead for me, even standard weight ones, that I've documented in several posts along my journey trying them in the recent "Anyone still using Superstroke" thread in this section. You might want to read through that thread for various opinions. If I tried SS again, I think it would need to be on non-insert putter with more pop.

Another thought for you... I wonder if you have depth perception issues that might warrant an eye exam since you are an excellent golfer by your cap? I'm generally ok on the greens for that but rely on my rangefinder for accurate distance on even short pitches often.

I have went they superstroke like it was going out of style, although great grips, could t get comfortable. I got frustrated the one night took a winn 17 inch belly putter grip, carved the bottom cap off, cut 3 inches off and glued the bottom cap back on and gripped my putter. It is by no means counter balanced but the winn grip being around the midsize range and having the non taper feel when gripping down has given me a lot more confidence on the greens. I have went so far to order 3 more belly grips off eBay so that I have them whenever I decide to change the grip

I went with a SS 3.0 on my TP Mills tour Huey and my stroke smoothed out. I had become a little to handsy on my putting stroke with my right hand shutting down from time to time. After some practice I felt the 3.0 was a little too large. I put a SS 2.0 on my DH89 then replaced that with a Salty mid-plus 1.15. The size and feel of the Salty is working pretty well for me. Still need a little more work but I believe the Salty grips are here to stay. My hands are quiet again and my putts are on line!

As much as the grip will perhaps mitigate some of the handsie tendencies it sounds like you might also want to work on some practice exercises for distance control. I've shipped many copies of my MBGPE putting lesson plan to the UK. Check my web site http://puttingdoctor.net for details.
