Questions about Graphite Design Shafts

Hey everyone, I'm hoping someone who knows more about club fitting than I do can help me out.

I'm currently playing an RBZ Stage 2 Tour 9* driver with the Taylormade stock shaft, which is the Matrix Red Tie. From what I understand, its a mid-launching shaft.

Here are my numbers: Launch angle- 15.2*, Spin Rate- 2100, Club head speed- 103

My numbers are decent, but I don't like the feel of the Matrix shaft. I'd also like to get my spin rate down to around 1800-2000. I've been looking into the Graphite Design shafts, and they sound fantastic based on what I've read, but I don't have the ability to try them out before I make a decision. I understand that the Tour AD DI is the higher launching shaft, with the DJ, GT, and BB each getting progressively lower. I know the MT is meant for the low spinning heads on the new drivers as well. My concern about going to the DI is that it will give me too much spin, whereas my concern with the BB is that it will not give me enough spin.

I'm wondering if anyone who knows about these shafts or has tried them will be able to give me a sense for how they might perform given my stats with the Matrix Red Tie shaft. Thanks!

The Red Tie S flex is 57g, 3.8* torque, and pretty much mid-everything. As a comparison, the GD DJ-5 S is very close with a little higher torque which would give you a softer feel. I've hit the DJ-5 and it is very smooth. It is a mid-spin shaft that has a profile close to the Red Tie.

Believe it or not, I actually liked the G50 better. That one is 59.5g, 3.9* torque, and mid-kick,spin, and launch. Its profile is also very close to the Red Tie. It is every bit as long as the DJ and is still very smooth, but has a tad firmer feel, which I liked. It is also about $100 and might be one of the best shafts out there in that price range.

My experience with Matrix is kind of limited but the ones I tried were very tip stiff. The DJ-5 shaft is the complete opposite with the G-50 somewhere in between. It's impossible to say what would work for you, or what you would prefer, but I think you might like the G series. My numbers are similar to yours and I've had very good results with it.

Based on my experience the Blue Bullet is mid launch and low spin. Feels great. The original addi is phenomenal as well but for me launched a bit higher and had about 300-400 more rpm than the BB. These are solid shafts and just perform. The orange addi was for me a mid high L and a mid S. Get the BB if you're looking to cut some spin.

On a side note you really should look at the UST Elements Chrome shaft. It's simply amazing. For me at least. I think its mid L and very low S. The feel is better than the GD but that's a personal preference. Was so easy to load and really kicks at impact. I actually picked up the 4 mph ball speed that they claim. I was shocked. I've played every premium shaft in the last 5 years and would stack this one up against them all

The Tour AD DI is a high launching shaft, but remains relatively low on the spin charts. I have them in both my 2Deep and X2 Hot hybrid and love them. Incredibly smooth feel during the entire swing and give me a great ball flight. If you're looking for a shaft with a slightly higher launch and lower spin, the Tour AD DI seems right up your alley. If you're looking for a lower launching shaft with low spin, the Tour AD BB shaft is for you. If you're looking for a shaft right in the middle, either the AD MT or AD GT are what you want. It is a shame that GD shafts are not readily available for demo and it's kind of like taking a shot in the dark. What I would do if I were you would be to post an ad in the WTB forum and pick something up used on the cheap(ish). Throw it in your driver and see how it works. If it's not giving you what you want flip it i in the classifieds for another option.

If his spin rate with the Red Tie is 2100 rpms why would he want to lower it? He would probaly gain distance with it being a little higher with a 103 mph swing speed. A 15.2* launch angle is just about optimal. If he is getting that with a mid-kick Red Tie then he should stay with a mid-kick shaft and look for something in a similar profile with a little better feel.

Personally, I don't buy into the baloney that TM is pushing. Nor do I buy into everyone playing with knuckle-ball spin rates. Every swing speed has an optimal spin rate and launch angle and much of that has to do with angle of attack. For TM to come out and say that every player needs a 17* launch angle and a 1700 rpm spin rate is misleading and incorrect.
