Tony hits it kinda far . . . I wonder if his driver shaft tipping is measured in inches or in feet.

I caddied for him and his brother here in Vegas back in 2007. On the first tee at Reflection Bay, he asked where the green was. I pointed to it and he hit it exactly where I pointed. His brother hit a flair to the right. He was ten feet short of the green. Unbelievable! He tried to drive number ten but hit the rocks just in front if the green. He was a class act back then and I don't think he was in his 20s yet. I really hope he does well. A kid like him deserves it.

Kind of funny what certain people do when they get on Tour and sponsored by big OEMs. Most run out and get names stamped on every club, get with Scotty to make ya a $10,000 putter, $4000 worth of shafts, have sparkling new grips and the biggest staff bag available..I'm this type of guy lol. Does all of this then ends up missing every cut!

Others like Tony don't change a thing. They still beat the hell out of there clubs, don't wash em, a $100 dollar putter with a grip that looks more brown than white, and I bet ya money it's driving him crazy having a staff bag lol. It wouldn't surprise me if he had a ball retriever in it! These guys seem to do better/earlier in there career. I'm sure eventually he will settle in and start living the high life

Great pics I hope he does well. Always fun to root for the home town guys.

Though much is taken much abides;
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

and for as far as he hits it , ad di 8x is an interesting choice,
[/quote]

Why? DI-8X is not soft. I know WRX'ers believe the DI plays soft and spins... but not DI-8X. Sure, the DI-6S might launch and spin a little higher but the 8X is very stiff especially tipped 1-2 inches...

All i said I thought it was interesting, coming from someone that owns one and has frequency/CPM the shaft I can attest to the stoutness esp tipped 1", HOWEVER, its stoutness with feel that the ad di 8x has.(and my SS is no where near his) A. Scott was playing it - and is in the top 20 in driving on tour, but I would have put finau in DJ, Woodland category, and those guys are into more rebar, but hey, Finau shoots missiles with it........ Just thought it was interesting choice.

As everybody who has met him attests, he's a friendly, courteous, likable fellow with a very good attitude. I've never seen him get mad on the course.

As for how long he is, well it's just astounding. Most of the time he's trying to dial it back. I followed him around the web.com stop this year and had to wait 10 holes before he even pulled out his driver. On ten, a 600 yard par five, he used driver/7 iron. Driver went 379, not downwind, not downhill. He had only the good weather and the elevation going for him.

The only person I've seen who is consistently longer is his little brother Gipper. Gipper was 10 to 20 past Tony almost every hole when they played together at the Provo Open a couple of years back.

Love guys like that...guys who are more interested in how the clubs play than look. I wish I was more like that too. :)
I remember an interview with Tom Lehman where he talked about his grips and how he played them until the rubber wore down if they felt right.

All those guys are different-- some guys like that softer feel. One of my guys who's 190+ ball speed played in a PGA Tour event last summer (he's still an am) and hit the 4 longest drives of the week and he likes shafts a little softer in the tip than the ultimate low launch, low spin variety. He can interchange between 8.2TS and 8.3TS as well as DI-8 tipped 1.5"... just depends hows he's feeling.

I didn't mean for it to sound like you were wrong-- his fairway has 8.3TS so he must like stiffer profile shafts with just a shade softer in the tip.

2 drives over 370, 20+ drives over 300. He's gonna make some noise. Great event for all the Utah boys, in fact.

He should make for some good TV this season. I enjoyed watching both him and Gipper on The Big Break.
