I have been to Scotland twice, pretty limited for ideas. You could go to St. Andrews. Lots of golf of course. Nice quaint town with two streets of shops, restaurants etc. And the big wool shop, sweaters etc., across the street from Old Course 18th green. There is a small Castle there the kids could explore. Was a siege laid to it long ago and it shows the huge tunnel of attackers and smaller ones of the defenders. All of which is open to the public. Also old cemetery there which was fun checking the dates etc. Big huge beach area to walk along, although it is probably getting a bit chilly. Kinda fun getting there train ends in the middle of nowhere and then doubledecker bus picks you up for a twenty minute ride into St. Andrews. Not sure if enough for kids to do, thought I would pass this on anyhow.

The only negative issue I can speak of with regards to St Andrews is the cost. Holiday rentals are relatively expensive in comparison to other parts of Scotland. You can get over that by staying in places like Leven/Lundin and other areas of Fife, then just visit St Andrews for the day, or when Golf is going to be played.

Ayrshire is another area you may want to consider. Holiday rental prices are a little cheaper than St Andrews, and the Golf is fabulous. Turnberry, Royal Troon, Western Gailes, Dundonald, Kilmarnock Barassie, Prestwick are just some of the Golfing options and Glasgow is only 40 mins away on an excellent train service. I have a property in Ayrshire and we are very lucky to split our familys' time between Scotland and our family home down South.

Aberdeenshire is another option, and so is Moray. Also East Lothian is very good, with Edinburgh only 25 mins away on the train for the family, and Golfing is excellent with Muirfield, Gullane, North Berwick, Kilspindie all on the doorstep. Holiday rentals are a little more akin to Fife as far as price goes, but it's worth some research.

If you want Holiday rental, you may want to check some initial costs on websites such as Cottages4you, Sykescottages, Ownersdirect, and even Tripadvisor. Go check out the Holiday rental prices in some of those areas, and some of the Courses you would like to play but please come back to me if you need any more help? I will be only too glad to help and advise.

No problem. As I said, please feel free to PM me at any time. I would be more than happy to help with some advice and specifics, as soon as you have decided which area of Scotland you prefer.

Our kids are older so this may not work for you, but we stayed in a converted manor house/castle in Dollar for four nights, rented a car, and were able to visit quite a bit of southern Scotland. We spent a day in St Andrews, a day in Loch Lomond, a day in Stirling, and a half day in Edinburgh and loved every minute. It was a little over an hour to St Andrews and Loch Lomond, and Stirling and Edinburgh were about half that far. Dollar itself was fun to see and there is the Castle Campbell ruins above town as well. We took a boat ride on Loch Lomond that was also fun.

If you catch a sunny day the Dollar glen on the way up to the castle is absolutely stunning as well, wouldn't say Dollar itself is that interesting aside from seeing what a typical Scottish village is like. Very decent location for Edinburgh/St. Andrews, the castle in Stirling, Loch Lomond within reasonanable reach.

Something like that is a good compromise if you can live without being in immediate reach of many decent restaurants etc.

Golf in that immediate region is quite affordable, but I am unsure of any specific packages as such. My club is one of the better ones in the area and charges 30 quid (USD 50) during the week and 35 on the weekend with reduced rates if playing more than 18. Doubt anywhere will charge more than GBP50 unless you are aiming at the big names & open venues.

http://www.visitscotland.com/see-do/activities/golf/golf-passes-offers-tours/passes/?page=1#resultsPane it seems most counties do offer golf passes for multiple rounds at different clubs. The important thing to remember is that the clubs have active competitive sections and therefore will usually not allow visitors on the course within a certain timeframe before and after a competition.

PM me if you want more info.

There is almost never a good time for weather but May is often better than June. Prices will be a touch lower too but courses will just be coming into season so might not give you the true links experience. I think you could do better for price going direct. It depends how much travel you want to do too.

I thought some of the descriptions were great travel agent bull. Very attractive but not very accurate. Your kids are still going to be very young next summer so things like the Landmark I Aviemore are a waste of time. The Highland Wildlife park is good though.

With young kids then I would look at a holiday cottage in Elie. They have a great beach the kids could play on while you explore golf courses in and around Fife. There are a couple of nice cafes too and it's a short drive to St. Andrews. I'm assuming it is mainly links v parkland you are after? The St. Andrews courses are expensive but you might get a deal staying somewhere like the Fairmont Hotel - it has two good courses itself.

There are some good courses up in the Aviemore area but it's a tougher place to get to and I'm assuming you want to keep the driving to a minimum with kids.

How much golf and how much sight seeing with the family?

Thanks we are wanting to make it about a 7 day trip. i want to play about 3 to 4 rounds. the place with a beach sounds the best. We are thinking about flying in to edinburgh stay there for a day. drive to st andrews for a day or to of golf and looking hanging out. Then at a lost of what else to do. I really want to go to St Andrews to see the sights and find a golf course there but then open for ideas of other great places to play.

Thanks again for all the input

Many cheaper alternatives out there compared to the links trust courses which are just as good.

Lundin, Leven, Crail, Elie are all very good links courses, Ladybank is a quality tree lined course for a bit of a difference. Many more options if you decide to go outside of the Kingdom of Fife. I'm not too sure about family activities in the immediate area (mainly because I'm in my early twenties, but one good one is the national deer centre (with some other animals too).

I'm a Scot, born in Stirling and have played golf for 60 years. I have played most golf courses in Scotland, but have to tell you that you will enjoy unknown courses far more than the famous. The latter are VERY expensive to play, prohibitively so at St. Andrews, Gleneagles and the Open Championship tracks.
One of the most scenically amazing is Callander in Perthshire, and Rosemount at Blairgowrie in Perthshire is beautiful. One course that is little known is Tulliallan in Clackmannanshire----it is also stunning and you are sure of a great welcome there.
It really is best to visit these lesser known courses as they are cheaper, quieter and usually better all round than the famous places.
I would suggest you stay in Stirling which is the historic seat of Scottish kings and the site of all the famous battles between the Scots and English in the 13th and 14th centuries, with a magnificent castle which was the scene of historic moments. From Stirling, all the best golf courses are within a few miles, and Edinburgh, Glasgow, Perth, Crieff and St. Andrews are all within easy striking distance.
Best wishes for your trip----I hope you enjoy it, but I would advise you to avoid the winter, unless you want to ski!!

I'm a member at Lundin and if dates worked then I would be happy to host you for a game there. Take a look at the web sites for Lundin, Leven (golfing society), Crail, Elie, Ladybank, Blairgowrie, Montrose, Monifieth, Scotscraig. Lots of great course all with history. For three or four games you have a lot of choice. Playing St Andrews is a great experience but so is just visiting and walking around - tons of golf shops. For the kids there is a small aquarium there too and a great ice cream shop.

I am sitting in Machrihanish right now and today was beautiful but I got lucky. Rain can happen anytime but o find the early part of September to be the best bet for weather. I am only up for two days so I hope I get lucky again tomorrow. Edinburgh is definitely the place you want based on what you said. Best combo of golf and giving the family something to do.

Also how hard is it to get on and take pictures on 17 on the order course with the family in the evening? do they allow it?

Don't worry, it's a public course so people take their dogs for walks across the Links at all manner of day and night, so you won't have any probs with photos with the family on the Course in the evening. Enjoy.

Best save it for a Sunday when the course is closed to golfers and you can walk the whole thing
