Playing Pinehurst #2 next weekend - looking for great barbecue joints

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My buddies and I are headed to Pinehurst for the Columbus Day weekend.

Can anyone recommend places for great barbecue that aren't too far from the Pinehurst resort?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks! I will definitely check it out as I trust my fellow WRXers' taste!

3 choices I know of...

Dickey's - A chain from Texas I think - not bad - decent atmosphere - Cafeteria style (In Pinehurst on 15-501)
Smithfields - A Chain - awful atmosphere - don't understand why folks go here (on Rt 1 in Southern Pines)
Pik n Pig - Up in Carthage (10 miles) but authentic local joint - would recommend

anything else is 30+ miles away -- lots of chain steakhouses that you can get something like Bar-b-que in Pinehurst area....

Do not know where you are coming in from, but if you fly into RDU, the biggest mistake tourists make is eating at The Pit. Its way overpriced for BBQ. If in Raleigh head to Cooper's in Downtown, cash only though. But delightful, since 1930s.

I was in Cary a few weeks ago for the NTIS event at the baseball park. Had dinner at the Pit one night before a Durham Bulls game...i can't argue that it was expensive but they had some great different beers and the food was awesome!

The one in Durham next to the park, Que? That is Ed Mitchell new spot. He left The Pit in Raleigh for Durham. The Pit is owned by a restaurant group and recently got a low B sanitation grade.

Wow, thank you for all the great suggestions! Given that I am only there for 2 nights, I'm going to try my hardest to hit all the spots mentioned in the above posts!

Thanks again, fellow WRXers!

You should eat one night at the Pine Crest Inn, get the Pork Chops. Cool hotel started by Donald Ross. Best drink prices in Pinehurst an Payne Stewart signed the wall after winning the Open in 99.

Friends don't let friends eat Dickey's in Texas ?

It was mediocre BBQ that has turned into horrible BBQ with a great national franchising program. I like to call it BBQ in a box.

Agreed; been to DFW many times over the last couple of years and Dickey's is a no-no. Only made that mistake once!
