I was driving down 75 the other day and noticed what looked like a driving range on the highway.

 

I looked into top golf and the concept looks really cool and fun for every one.

 

Who goes to Top Golf? How do you "play the game" ? Is it a waste of money?

Live in st pete, just got back from Dallas and they have one it was really fun, great atmosphere... Comparable to renting a bowling lane for an hour... Like $25

Top Golf is a Dallas based company. We have 3 of them in the Dallas area. You can play multiple games. You control the ball dispenser with a touch screen in your bay. Once you are up to hit, you simply waive your club over a motion sensor and out comes a ball onto the mat and you hit. You can play a simple game where you it into any target you want at varying distance. Each target is like dart board, so more points for you on one target if you hit close to the flag. You can play a game where you have to hit it at one target for 5 balls then move on to a different target. Then there is 'cricket-like' game where you have to specifically hit spots on one target. Lots of fun, anyone can play it. If someone can't play, it's a great bar/sports bar scene. It is wildly popular in DFW and they are rapidly expanding the company from the press releases that I read. I would not call it a place to practice if you really are hardcore about your practice.

I've been to all three in Dallas, one in Alpharetta, one in Houston, one in Austin and one in Phoenix/Scottsdale. Top Golf is awesome. It is not your typical driving range experience. Be prepared for a fun, party atmosphere. There will be a large number of young professionals and non golfers. In my opinion, Top Golf is the best thing for the game right now. It is drawing a demographic that is essential for the future of golf. It is intro ducting golf to a new demographic. The TG in Austin was voted best bar in town. The price is reasonable and the atmosphere is untouched. I am yet to meet anyone that did not have a great time. My GF who is just learning the game, loves this place. She is able to get feedback on her shots and play games that make it interesting. it takes the intimidation out of golf. Enjoy!

Most are different prices depending on the time. In Alpharetta, it is $25 before noon and $45 after, for an hour.

For that price it definitely seems like it's geared for the recreational driving range aficionado that just goes to hit balls with his friends. I don't see any serious golfers going here and spending $25-$45 an hour, especially when there's no grass. I will definitely try it though, but I WON'T be going by myself, I can get a full bucket at a course close to my house for $4. I'll take that.

It's definitely not targeted at those that are wanting to practice. It is more or less, a bowling atmosphere but with golf. It isn't a place you are going to go to really improve your game much and it is not near as fun by yourself. I travel a lot for work so, I have been here by myself as well as with customers and coworkers. It is definitely a group experience. When you break it down, 4 people, 2 hours @$45/hr is $90 or $22.50 per person. Pretty reasonable entertainment cost. The food and drinks are reasonable and the atmosphere is top notch. I am a single digit handicap player who spends hours on the range each week yet, I enjoy Top Golf as much as many people that may play one or twice a year or some that have never played before. Top Golf is less about golf and more about entertainment.

Top Golf is awesome. I've only been to the one in NoVA, Alexandria I think. Great atmosphere, good food and drinks. It's always packed, but worth the wait for a fun night out.
