Here's the plate from the fastback.

what size hex allen wrench did you need for the squareback... and what did you actually use to remove the red color? looking to do this to my squareback and leave it the raw color.
don't recall the allen wrench size. it was on one of those swiss army style allen wrench sets. it's a common size.

and i removed to red anodization using a product called Greased Lightning that available at most Home Depots. Oven cleaning products also supposedly work, but I used Greased Lightning

I decided to hang on to this putter and strip the red anodized finish from the original sole plate. After doing some research, it seemed like the easiest thing to use was Easy Off Heavy Duty Oven Cleaner found at WalMart for $4!

Here's what you need:

Easy Off Oven Cleaner
Latex Gloves
Some type of metal or hard plastic container big enough for the sole plate to fit it.

Once the sole plate is removed from the putter, I simply placed it in a metal bowl and sprayed the Easy Off all over the entire surface of the sole plate. Wait 10-15 minutes, remove, and rinse in clean water. Flip the sole plate over to the other side and repeat the process. * Make sure you do this work outside or in a well ventilated area!

The red anodization literally falls right off. Once rinsed in water just wipe with a clean soft towel and your done.

Here is the finished result. Let me know what you think!

Did you refill the lettering after taking off the anodizing?

Want to do this to my Golo5 but make it a sleeper (completely stripped of any color)

Looks sweet man. Props.

Yes, once I removed the red anodized finish, I paintfilled how I wanted. You can leave it blank or paint it whatever color you choose!

Saweeet!

So if I wanted to take the paint off of the weights and everything I could just spray down the entire club?

Yes. Leaving it as a sleeper. Can't wait!

No, you need to remove the paint with acetone or some other paint remover.

I know it sounds crazy but the Easy Off will only remove the red anodization from the sole plate. It won't remove the paintfill. Same with the sole weights. You will need to remove the paint with acetone on those as well.

I'm sorry for my ignorance but what is a "thermally cured polymer coating"? Sounds like you had to send it out? I want to convert my GoLo7 to a blue model. Tahnks.

Sorry if I'm off topic but my mod kind of fits this in the reverse way. I want to leave the red plate color but change the lettering colors on my golo s5. Will acetone take the paint lettering color off and leave the red plate color? I was worried the acetone would remove the red plate color as well as the lettering colors. TIA

Acetone will not remove the red anodized finish. It will only remove the paintfill. You will still see the red anodized coloring because the entire sole plate is finished then painted.

I tried to get the plate off with a 1/16 allen wrench but it was a hair too small and would not grip the screws. Anyone else have this problem?

Make sure you are pushing into the sole plate while turning the allen wrench. Also, you may have to heat the sole plate with a little heat to loosen the loctite that is holding the screws in place. All it takes is very minimal heat.

If the 1/16 is a bit small, try the metric equivalent (sorry don't have my chart handy right now). You can get them out with the standard wrench but the metric may for a little better
I bought a set of metric and standard from Lowes and the smallest one for both sets is slightly too small and the next size up is slightly too large. they are very flimsy and cheap, I need to find a strong well made one and it should work.

Got it. I had to use a heat gun and a hard core 1.5 hex wrench I got from the hobby store. The screws are a little stripped but will worry about that later.

I just wonder .... what was your thought process that made you want to do that ?? was the red color on the sole plate that overwhelming ??

and after doing what you did , if you did not like it how do you return it to the original state ? ... I would not say what you did is something I would do

and I give you credit for a job well done

I couldn't stand the red color of the sole plate. Plain and simple. I never worried about returning to the original state once the anodized finish was removed.

I put the plate in a plastic jar and doused it with the oven cleaner and let that sit for 20 min, then rinse it off and scrub it a bit. I used an old toothbrush

It's something that can be done at home. The polymer coating has to be sprayed on and heat cured. An oven will do the trick nicely to cure it.
Where did you get the polymer coating? Are we talking Ace Hardware or Home Depot or some where else?

Here's the finished product. The paint fill is a metallic purple which is hard to see in the pictures. I buffed the plate to give it a contrast to the putter. Fun project, thanks for sharing!
