Does your club have rules for non full members.

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if any courses have rules for tee times for guests, 9 hole and summer members etc. What I always noticed in summer is that the course is always packed, it doesn't matter what time you play non full members are playing around you and the rounds just seem to take forever and it's hard to get a tee time that suits you. I know some clubs where guests have to play after 1pm. That seems kind of fair in my opinion since you are paying full membership fees you should be entitled to some privileges. I know you what to encourage new golfers but if you don't give them all the rights of a full playing member wouldn't that persuade them to become a full member?

My club is full member play only before 11 am on weekends... That means no spousal memberships, no junior members, no guests before 11. On Friday, all tee times open back up. So if there is a 9:10am sunday tee time available when you call on Friday than it is fair game for anyone. But before then it's full members only

Where I'm at, junior (under age 35) and limited members can't tee off until 11am on weekends. Limited members can only play 15 rounds per year. Neither limited nor juniors can play in the club championship, and can only play in other tournaments, the member guest, etc. after unrestricted members have been given an opportunity to sign up. Spouses of juniors and limited members have to pay the full guest fee and are subject to the same time/round number restrictions.

What's funny is that a guest of a unrestricted member can play at 10am or later on weekends, but a restricted or junior member can't play his own course until 11am.

However, juniors and restricted members are paying less than half of what everyone else is. Some people under age 35 get around the restrictions by being on a corporate membership with their parents.

Thanks guys.

Our coursee is fully private. I just thing it's a bit unfair. I might mention it because it's only going to get worse.

I remember when we were juniors there was a rule about not playing before 1 pm but that was never enforced. It does seem like most private courses have a sort of rule. I know some others around here do.

One of my clubs has a 1 guest per member rule before 10 am on the weekends. So you can play 2 guests per 4 some, they just can't both be yours. My other club has a strict no guests at all before 11 am on the weekends rule. Other than that, no restrictions.

If your club isn't fully private or has several gimmicky memberships they aren't in a good position to set all these limitations. They need the outside play to survive.

Depends on where you are. ;)

We're only semi-private and we restrict it to members only from 8-10 am on Sat/Sun; no guests and still have a healthy membership, full tee sheets and balanced budget with more than adequate reserves. Our club is better managed and operated than I've ever seen. :)

We don't allow junior, senior or corporate members to play until after noon on weekends. We don't limit the number of guests to full members; but a guest can only play 4 times in a calendar year. Junior and corporate members do not pay the initiation. When a junior turns 35 they pay the initiation and are full members.

My club is members only. Only non-member play is the guest of a member and the member has to be there with their guest.

Same for us. No unaccompanied play and no guests on Friday and Sunday prior to noon, none on Saturday prior to 12:30. We have one annual charity event/year that allows outside play on a day that the course would be closed anyway. I commonly don't even make a tee time. The whole goal is an uncrowded course.

The reason for Junior membership at 35 and under is because clubs need to attract members, and if you get the young members in at 35 and treat them well, you'll more than likely have them at 55, 65 etc etc.
[/quote]

This is the truth. I don't know a whole lot of 27 year old's with the means to pay a $5-15000K initiation fee which is around what clubs that have these kinds of memberships charge traditionally, and then the means to pay $7-10K a year in dues after that.

There was a great debate about whether to drop initiation charges and lower dues for guys under 35 at my club before I came on, and what they found out in a little study they did, was that members who joined spent an average of around 7k$ in and around the club regardless of what they paid to get in. Therefore it makes sense to get them in and get them spending because you'll make up the cost of dropping their initiation fee in a couple of years, if not less anyway. The real deterrent to younger guys is high up front costs.

My club allows guests to play no more than 6 times per year and they have to play with a member. People related to me are 50% off green fees. No rules on times or days.

My club is no guests weekends before 9AM, 1 guest per foursome until 11AM. Class B members can't play until 11, blah. With membership way down these policies are now too restrictive and should be adjusted. No tee times, though. Love it.

Another club I'm a member at (semi-private) is no guests, random tee times on Saturday and Sunday mornings. They hold a lottery on Wednesday and you're assigned a time from 7:00-11:00. You must have a full foursome and I think they penalize you if you no-show. Then they have a limited member window. Exhausting. But they have a huge membership and a multi-year waiting list precisely because they're $3K initiation, <$2K/year. The only way you're going to play a decent course at anywhere near that price on Saturday or Sunday morning within 25 miles.

During the summer, you may be seeing a lot of 1 member/3 guest play. Which is often slow and inept-looking as well (my guests sometimes included).

Clubs have two possible purposes -- #1) support member play or #2) get rounds in and make money. There are some semi-private courses that have adapted to the economy with a lot of public play that still support #1. But membership in many semi-private clubs is just a glorified discount card system or tee time priority system and they have very little interest in your experience as long as it doesn't drive you to quit.

Most golf pros and golf committees have never heard of the discipline of operations management, and have no idea the research that's gone into exactly how to deal with this problem. So they manage by past practice, personal whim, and seat of their pants. Sigh.
