It just me or are a lot of pros switching to Nippon Iron Shafts?

I've been playing the prototypes for 2 years now. Nippon set out to make a TON of different shafts that fit all kinds of players. So far we only have 3 of these prototypes come to retail, the 120, 130 and now the 125. The prototypes have some amazing specs that you just can't get anywhere else. The 130 is a great example, it was the 2G18 proto, but they put a soft tip on an extremely stiff shaft. The C10 and ORA are probably the most versatile and fit a ton of players. The 125 I think is kind of like those two. The 2S14 proto is like an upgraded SPB. Obviously the ORA is upgraded SP Orange. The 2F15 is like a counter balanced PX but smoother. The ST is the 115g? version Stenson and others use. Plays like a X100 but lighter, so lighter shaft, retains strength and characteristics of X100 but lightweight is less demanding on body and easier to swing quicker. Then you have the DP, the E11 and others.

I have been using the 2G18 / retail 130's for about a year, before that it was a year of the 2S14's. The C10 IMO is maybe the best wedge shaft I've ever used. I am really excited to try the 125. It seems like a blend of the 120/130. I haven't hit the 120 outside, just into nets indoors. But the 125 seems like it could be a hit. I just wish some US OEM would pick up Nippon as a standard option so you'd see more of them in the stores. The majority of the U.S. doesn't know what they are missing.

Nippon is the best feeling steel out there. I've been playing the Super Peening Blue for over 6 years now. It's no surprise that more pros are finally deciding to try something other than the old DG

I tried the Modus 130 S and it was too stiff and heavy for me. LOVED the feel of the shaft though. Don't want to go 950 light, but which Nippon shaft do you guys recommend? Probably going into AP2 714 or perhaps i25 irons.

i would say the modus3 120 Stiff would be right in your sweet spot

120, 125, and 130 are the retail versions. 130 I know for sure as called the 2G18 in the proto lineup. The 125 may or may not be the C10. 120 is close to the ORA, but I think is tweaked to be weaker than the proto. I'd love to have Lee or a Nippon rep on GolfWRX to help us hash out all the protos. Maybe give out a few sets of the 125's to try. I also have some of the WV125 wedge shafts, but I don't prefer their feel. Feels a little too heavy near the grip to me. The 130stiff is turning out to be a great wedge shaft, I highly suggest it. The C10 has been in my 56° for 2 years now. If the 125 is in fact the C10, I would buy a gap wedge & lob wedge ASAP to match. For now, the 130 is working great in those since I couldn't get my hands on more C10's in stiff.

What about a replacement for the 950? Anything in the Modus family that gets close to the 100gram range?

Currently gaming some J38 combos with PX 6.0s. If i switched to Nippon which ones would give me similar performance with the better feel that everyone is raving about, would love to try something new if i pick up some new J15s. I like my 6.0s but im probably somewhere in between the PX 5.5 and 6.0. Would love some help if there is a quick answer to save me a lot of time researching these shafts.

Yes, more and more players are switching to Nippons but you don't hear much because Nippon doesn't advertise so you don't hear and see the hype. I've used many steel shafts, for me the Nippons are the best in all category's.

Interested in the 130 for my wedges - so I should look for the 2G18? Want to go with something just a little lighter than my X100s but obviously a little softer to flex as well.

I recently hit Srixon 545, 745, 945 with modus 2 and 3, nothing but rave about these irons / shafts.

I didn't think I was going to have to consider changing irons after getting my S55's (which I still love), but I must say a combo of :

[3-4] srixon 545 modus 2 /120
[5-6-7] srixon 745 modus 2 /120
[8-9-p] srixon 945 modus 2 / 120

is starting to appeal to me :/

Lets see what 2015 brings!

I played the Nippon NS 115 gram gram shaft for about 4 months in my MP 54s.... They killed my elbow. They felt harsh and I could feel everything with them. I sold them and went back to Project X.

Awesome info. I'm looking to replace my PX 5.5's and thinking the 120S would be a good option. I believe both stiffs are about 115g which is perfect for me playing +1 in. Hoping that the ball flight is similar.

Made this same switch. Haven't looked back. 120 is a tad longer in long and mid irons, comparable in short irons. Traj is very close, dispersion close as well. Feel is waaaaay better. Playing them in Yonex iezone forged and 714 AP2.

It's the same shaft. I think my irons are 2G18 protos that are softstepped once. They work great. I have a late release with lots of lag and big inside flip move, these shafts hang with me no problem. No ballooning. I also tend to pick the ball thin and the softer tips help me get the ball airborne on the really thin shots. I have a set of the X and man, they are beasts. I wouldn't suggest 130x to anyone unless they are looking for PX 7.0+ or DG X700 replacements. I'm pretty sure Sergio uses the 2G18 in X. He was using PX 7.2? maybe before, and he uses Diamana 105x's and crazy heavy/stiff stuff. I'd be wary of those rebars. The X set I have was supposedly a trial set they built for Fowler. The proto's I use are from a Cleveland staffer in a set of 588 MB tour heads. For wedges, I suggest the 130 in stiff if you're a S, TS or X player, maybe 130R if you're a R/SR/S player. I'm going to try the Tiger 8i stepping of a 130 to see how that feels too. But the wedge shaft feels so stable in your hands because its so stiff in the upper section, and then the soft tip is responsive and gives the ball some great bite. The C10 is kind of like a better balanced S400. Tighter in grip/tip. I hope the Modus 125 is that. I hit the C10's in irons in a set of Adams A12 CC heads and man were they good. The WV125, to me, is weighted weird, it makes me feel like my hands are hindered by weight. It seems balanced weird. But I know it gets pretty good use on tour, so don't go off my lone comment. I have 3 of them, they just sit.As for the lighter stuff, I don't know if Nippon will make a revamped 850,950,etc. Seems the 125 is for the JDM mostly so they are going heavier there too. If it ain't broke. They may do a modus line for the lighter weight stuff. But for now, seems they have DG, PX, & KBS in their sights.

I've been playing the prototypes for 2 years now. Nippon set out to make a TON of different shafts that fit all kinds of players. So far we only have 3 of these prototypes come to retail, the 120, 130 and now the 125. The prototypes have some amazing specs that you just can't get anywhere else.
Thanks for the great info. Are the 120,125, and 130 prototypes you're referring to the Modus line, or are they a different model?
Interested in the 130 for my wedges - so I should look for the 2G18? Want to go with something just a little lighter than my X100s but obviously a little softer to flex as well.

And here I was, all this time, thinking you were just all about Aldila ;)

Great info in this thread, thanks Mark.

I'm playing the WV shafts in my wedges right now, I'm a fan. The last set of wedge shafts I was playing for a while were S400s and the WVs blow them away, but like you, that's just me!

A few guys I really trust about equipment have been raving about the Nippons for quite some time now, I reckon it's about time to give the Modus a good shot in the near future.

I've been playing the Modus3 120S in my Ping i20 irons for about two and a half years. I like the feel, dispersion and consistency in the shorter irons. But be warned that this is a stiffer tip shaft than many others out there, including the DG S300. I personally have a hard time getting a high enough ball flight with the 4 and 5 irons. If you are looking for a lower, flatter ball flight these might be a good choice for you, but be prepared. I'm about ready to change to something else.
