Golf Recommendations in the Denver Area

Recommended Posts

I'm headed to Denver in a couple of weeks and am looking at playing golf one day. I've looked around online at some courses, but you can only tell so much by pictures. I'm looking for something below the $80 price range and within a 20-30 min radius. By the looks of what I've found online, I'm interested in: Highlands Ranch, Fossil Trace, Arrowhead, and Green Valley Ranch. For those that are familiar with these, I would appreciate your input. If I have left off any that you feel would be great courses, feel free to list those. Thanks in advance!

A very good course close to the airport (DIA) is Buffalo Run. 15700 E 112th Ave, Commerce City, CO 80022

(303) 289-1500 Buffalo Run has hosted some US Open qualifying rounds in the past and is a real nice layout for the money typically around $65.00

Two courses south east of town again near the airport are:

Saddle Rock Golf Course 21705 E Arapahoe Rd, Aurora, CO 80016, (303)699-3939

Murphy Creek 1700 S Old Tom Morris Rd, Aurora, CO 80018, (303)361-7300.

Both of these can be played for under 60.00 typically and both are Great layouts.

Out of the courses you listed I would recommend Fossil Trace, but you really cant go wrong with any of your choices. Golf in Colorado is wonderful any place you play.

One last suggestion about 30 miles south of Dnver is the town of Castle Rock and Red Hawk Ridge Golf course, 2156 Red Hawk Ridge Dr Castle Rock, CO 80109-3524 (720) 733-3500

it is a really fun course to play with great views, rates range frome 35.00-70.00 depending on when you play.

1.) Fossil Trace in Golden.....a fun, unique and challenging course. A must play!!

2.) Highland Ranch Golf Club....Hale Irwin Design and also a great course.

3.) Saddle Rock Golf Course in S.E. Aurora....Great panoramic front range views and a good layout.

Arrowhead is also a unique experience but not sure if it will be under the $80 range.

Just thought I would chime in from up north. Right around 30 min. from downtown, and if you'd like to save a little $$$...Coal Creek is the most fun and best kept course for under $50 ($47) I've ever seen. Great place (and my home course). Legacy Ridge is also a beautiful place and a very challenging course (but not a great walking course, unless you like to walk a **lot** between holes) -- similar pricing, little more I think. I highly recommend both.

Otherwise, haven't played Murphy Creek, but I can say that Fossil Trace is one not to miss.

I play Buffalo Run every Wednesdays and I wouldn't play there if I were you. They have a had a bad time with their aeration and 75% of each green has died off. I played Green Valley Ranch last week and it is in great shape. Cost me $40 with cart for twilight, on a Saturday. Fairly easy course. I played The Heritage at Westmore on Sunday and it is in great shape. Greens are super fast and hard. Can't say much about the other recommendations, since I haven't played them.

Tttown,

Denver has great golf, it's a bit early but you should have fun.

Highlands Ranch - No, not a chance.

Fossil Trace - I love this place. Quirky and a lot of fun

Arrowhead - Scenery scenery scenery. No place quite like it. Locals don't play here because of American golf. Go, take a camera and let golf be secondary.

Green Valley Ranch - good course

Murphy Creek - Good course. Don't play this and GVR.

Buffalo Run - NO WAY. SLOW SLOW SLOW and BORING BORING BORING.. Can you tell I don't like this place

Saddle Rock - I heard they lost fairways last year due to a disease. 10 is one tough SOB!

You are missing the real gem. Riverdale Dunes. Pete Dye. Awesome greens. Fair test. Hosted Hogan event a few years.

I would play Riverdale Dunes, Fossil Trace and Arrowhead(scenery). Here's an excerpt from Avid Golfer magazine. Bear Dance is about 45 minutes south of downtown. Same for Ridge($$$$)

"BEST PUBLIC OR RESORT COURSE (DENVER REGION)

Winner: The Golf Club at Bear Dance (Larkspur)

How this course has stayed off the national charts remains a mystery. The piney setting wants for nothing and insulates each hole from the next. Every shot presents a challenge, and the bedeviling greens don’t shed shots like they once did.

Made the Cut: Fossil Trace Golf Club, Murphy Creek Golf Course, The Ridge at Castle Pines North, Riverdale Dunes"

Another thumbs up for Legacy Ridge. One of my old college roommates lives about 2 miles from there so we play about once a month. It's very reasonably priced and the course is beautiful. Totally agree that it isn't a walking course. It would take you forever to walk it. It's pretty spread out.
