Golfballselector.com Site Review

Thanks to markheardjr for the membership!
Hi everyone!

A few weeks ago I was fortunate enough to win a contest given by Golfwrx member markheardjr where the winner would receive a premium membership to golfballselector.com. The winner had to pick Mark’s final score during his round at Torrey Pines – South Course. One of the conditions of the contest was that the person who wins it would need to provide a review of the golfballselctor.com website. Although there have been several topics already discussing the site here on Golfwrx, I’m going to honor my commitment and start a new thread with this review. I apologize if any of this information is redundant.

Registration

The registration process was simple and easy. I entered some basic information (name, address, etc.) and I got to choose my username and password. I then was asked which plan I wanted to choose….Standard for $19.99 or Premium for $29.99. The standard plan allows you the opportunity to a single fitting session (accessible for 30 days) while the premium membership gives you unlimited fitting sessions throughout the year. Since I had a promotional code to cover the premium membership fee, I didn’t have to enter any credit card information.

Golf Ball Selector System

After registration I proceeded directly to the golf ball selector section. The first question asked me about my driver ball speed and although I know it (approx. 148-152 mph) I decided to play dumb and tell the system that I wasn’t sure. The system allowed me to continue the next question which then asked me about my clubhead speed. Although I know it too (approx. 100-105 mph) I decided to play dumb again.

The system then asked me for my average driving distance including carry and roll. I wasn’t allowed to play dumb this time so I plugged in my average of 270 yds. After entering this information it then proceeded to ask me questions about my launch angle and spin rate. After I answered these questions, the system calculated my swing profile to look like this:
  • BALLSPEED: 140 – 153 MPH
  • CLUB HEAD SPEED: 100 – 109 MPH
  • LAUNCH ANGLE: LOWER
  • SPIN RATE: LOWER
  • ESTIMATED DRIVER: 260 – 280 Yards

I would agree with everything in this swing profile projection with the possible exception of spin rate. I would say that I’m a medium spin player. However, the site only measured you as either a low-spin or high-spin player. No medium spin option. Anyway, I agreed with the profile and continued to the next portion of the survey.

I then was asked a series of several questions ranging from my preference of distance vs. control to whether I like a firm or soft feeling ball. There were several questions regarding how firm or soft I wanted the ball ranging from driver feel preference to sand-wedge feel preference. All of my answers were fairly neutral as I prefer a combination of both distance and accuracy. I also prefer a softer feeling ball so my answers tended to be more on that side of the equation.

Results/Recommendations

When the survey was completed, the winner was the Wilson PX3 Performance with a 100.0% rating. I have to admit that I know absolutely nothing about this ball. I usually play the Bridgestone B-330 (7th choice @ 87.6% rating) and the Pro V1x (9th choice @ 85.8% rating) so needless to say I’m a little surprised. I would have never thought that my balls of choice would finish 7th and 9th respectively. Other surprises were the Bridgestone E5 (2nd choice @ 96.3% rating) and the Wilson TX4 Tour (5th choice @ 90.0% rating) so it makes me a little curious that Wilson was so prominently mentioned in my recommendations as they placed 1st and 5th.

Out of curiosity, I did go back and teak some of my answers and the ball recommendations changed dramatically. So, I would advise anyone using this site to be extra careful in your answers as the recommendations will definitely change depending on your answers.

Conclusion

Of course, the true review/evaluation of this site will be how well the ball choices match my game. I’m an 8 handicap and a pretty good ball striker. I lose most of my strokes from poor chipping and the occasional “where in the world did that swing come from” shot. Therefore, I’m going to give the Wilson PX3 Performance ball a chance and see what it does for my game.

I hope this review was somewhat informative and I want to thank Richard, Ryan and Mark for providing me the opportunity to use golfballselector.com for an entire year. I’m optimistic it can help shave a few strokes off my game.

See ya’ around the Golfwrx site.

Good review, glad to see you found the site easy to manuver and the system is at least close to what you would expect, in terms of swing predictability or however you say it. (Basically it can predict your numbers even if you answer "don't know."

I will be very interested to see how your performance goes with the Wilson. That is a very interesting suggestion, not one I would have expected. I would have expected B330, Srixon Z-UR, TP Black, HX Tour etc... Not top of the line super spin balls but the next step down.

I'm playing to about a 4 handicap and I have the same issues with a short chip or a random out of nowhere swing. I think I need more short game practice and some more rounds will help too. Maybe I'll start hitting the range more often. Putting is hot or ok, rarely have a horrible putting day unless it's some mutilated muni track.

Thanks for the review...Glad to pass along the opportunity...

As a follow-up to my initial golf ball fitting session with golfballselector.com, I decided to go back to the site and answer every question with neutral replies. These questions ranged from my preference of distance vs. accuracy, firm feel vs. soft feel, driver feel vs. wedge feel, etc.

Here were the top 10 recommendations.

Bridgestone e5 100.0%

Wilson PX3 Performance 97.5%

Nike ONE Platinum 96.7%

Titleist Pro V1 96.4%

Titleist Pro V1x 90.7%

Bridgestone Tour B330 89.7%

Nike ONE Black 89.5%

Wilson TX4 Tour 88.8%

Titleist NXT Tour 86.1%

Srixon AD-333 85.6%

Very interesting stuff. I think I'll have to try some of these balls (Wilson, Nike, etc.) and see what they do for my game. I'm pretty satisfied with my B330's and Pro V1x's but you never know!

Cool review, but I can't justify spending 20 or 30 bones just to have someone/something tell me what ball is best for me without ever watching me play. I would rather buy a few different sleeves of balls that I like and test them out that way.

The site is a neat idea if you have have the money to throw away but it really isn't going to tell you anything that you don't already know (that is if you have been playing golf for a few years)... might be best for newer golfers who are still looking for new things to improve their game. Anyone who is already comfortable with the ball they play shouldn't make a switch because then you have to learn all over again about how the ball performs.

I paid for the subscription, and I'm disappointed because the ball list is very outdated--no new Callaway balls, for example, and the list includes a lot of balls that aren't even widely available anymore (like the Wilson).

Agreed. I am still waiting on relevant ball updates.

I'd recommend people hold off on buying a year subscription (as I did), until the '08 balls are tested. Some have changed signficantly, and some of the recommendations 'appear' to be quite old (they use cover photo's from old boxes).

Of course if you're a bargain hunter and want to buy cartons of two year old balls, you can sign up now and find out which ones would work for you.

For right now, I'm getting recommendations on lots of balls I can't buy off the shelf today.

Yes, indeed several of the new balls are now listed, Cally iX, TM TPs, e5+, NOP/NOB '08....very cool as has most all the top 2006-2008 brands and models in their database.

Their 'testing' methodologies seem fairly complete, so I like to play around and change mixture of distance, control and feel. Cally iX is the longest, with TM TP Black very clsoe second. What's interesting is apparently just how much improved some models of same brand are over the previous year.
