USPS golf club shipping prices

Am i doing something wrong or have the USPS prices gone up dramatically to ship a club(s) with what would be considered an normal golf club box?

 

I went into a post office last week and they tried charging me around $40 for priority mail to ship a 2 hybrids in a box that had the dimensions of 45x6x6.

 

I have a bunch of shafts and a set of irons i need to sell, but if it's going to cost me $40 to ship them, then it's really not worth it IMO.

I just shipped a hybrid, highballed the weight at 3 lbs, and my online quote for priority was like 8 bucks.

The weight isn't that much, it's the size of the box per what i was told by the lady at the counter when i went to pay. What were the dimensions of the box you used?

I always ship with the standard golf club boxes, 46x6x6.

Do you have an online account? I always do that online, pay, and just drop off physically. Dealing with Post Office employees makes me worse than road rage.

Weight is a huge factor, but so is destination. I can ship a a club to a state or two away and have it cost me $5-7. The same club going to AZ will be $20 (just random examples, not actual costs). USPS seems to really get you once you get above 3-4 lbs so shipping multiple clubs in one box can be pricey. I never ship irons USPS unless they are going somewhere close...have seen $40+ to ship irons Priority a few states away.

And REALLY fast if you're within the right range. I buy some things in the New England area online, and UPS usually has them to me in Maryland the very next day.

$40 for 2 hybrids? That doesn't sound right. If you went in person I would start doing it online. 2 hybrids would cost me about $13 to ship from CA to NJ. I wonder if it's the dimensions. I think I usually do 45 x 5 x 5. Check to see if the girth exceeds their limits.

$40 sounds off unless that's for 24/48 hr. delivery.

If the box dimensions are greater than 108 total inches (2x length+ width + depth) then you get hit with a big premium. I wonder if the worker just fat fingered a dimension.

It has to be the balloon charge for the dimensions as noted above. Always use the online calculator w/ dimensions of the box and weight and you will know the price you will pay. Either the clerk entered the dimensions wrong or you are reporting the diminesions wrong or maybe both:)

45x6x6 won't get you the balloon charge.

I think you got a priority express quote instead of just standard priority. That sound right for 1-2 day priority express. Way too much for 2-3 day priority.

You have to watch the clerks -- they don't always measure accurately. 48x6x6 is the limit, anything more than that in volume gets hit with the balloon charge. But some of the clerks will round things up, so if you have a box that's 50x5x5 (which is pretty common), they might not lay the tape measure right at the edge and consider a little over 5" to be 6". If you have a box with the dimensions printed on the end, and they result in 48x6x6 or less, keep them visible, if possible so they won't try to measure it themselves.
