Refinishing scratch-marks on Scotty Cameron Select Golo

Recommended Posts

I have this Scotty Cameron Golo putter, and it's got some scratch-marks on the surface which I'm a bit bothered with.

I've looked at other threads about refinishing Scotty Cameron putters, and I've come up with 2 interesting ideas:

1) Birchwood Casey Perma Blue Liquid and or Paste

2) Birchwood Casey Super Black Touch up pen

Will any of these two products be able to blend in to the PVD finish on my Scotty ? - or is there anything else i should try instead?

Hope you will help with your opinion on my problem

Thanks!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but there is no "fixing" those marks by blending them with blackener, of any kind. The marks have worn thru the black PVD coating and when the putter head is stainless steel, no blackener will even have an effect. Also, the Caswell 303 blackener will only make the scratches or marks stand out, if it has any effect at all.
Best option? Have the black removed altogether and go with a satin finish in silver. Or, send it off and have it professionally done by someone like Tom Slighter.
I wish that there was an in-home fix, but not in this case.

Thanks for the good info on Tom Slighter, will definitely look into him.

I just recently took a notchback (which has the same PVD finish) to a local sand blaster because of the same issue.... He was able to sandblast it down to the Raw finish, then i took it over to a powdercoating place & they put a matte clear-coat on over the Raw Finish. Beginning to end cost me about 40 bucks, and it is SWEEET.

Just an idea :)

+1 on sourcing a local shop to blast off the remaining PVD down to a satin stainless look.

If they or another shop close by offer alternative finishes from there that suit your fancy then that is gravy.

This isn't by any means a knock on Slighter or any of the other oft-mentioned refinish shops here, I just find it timelier and cheaper (shipping!) to try to do this stuff in your own 'hood if at all possible. Plus you're stimulating your local economy... win-win!

Thanks for the reply :)
The process with the beadblasting seems to be the only option for me to get a decent looking putter again - but what kind of shops do I look for? Shops that do coatings on cars fx? - Do you think it will work if I tell them to powder-blast the putter? What kind of specs like grit and psi would be the best to get the putter looking best possible? :D

That would probably work; most places that have large paint booths also have blasting capability. What's nice about a putter head is that it is tiny compared to a lot of the stuff some metal shops have to blast.

The keyword when calling around is if they can do 'sandblasting'. Also in your favor would be if they can do walk-in orders for a small piece, with low minimums if any (e.g. you'd have to pay for 3 hours labor on a 15-30 minute job at most).

Hitting the yellow pages (or the internets) and calling these places to discuss exactly what you want to do is really the best course of action to make your decision.

I believe a lot of folks have used 80-100 grit glass bead with success. Note that PVD is simply a coating and not a plating, which would require coarser media like aluminum oxide etc.

Finchi is right on with the psi; he knows what he's talking about and has posted some amazing refinish work of his own on this site over the past year I have been a member here. :fan_1:

Thanks for the help, it is very helpfull. :)
What would happen if I left the cherrybombs uncovered while sandblasting?
[/quote]

I did this with one of my golos a while back. What looks like maybe a chrome ring around the red dots is really just polished stainless... so, if you leave this uncovered during the process, the paint will all be removed along with the polished look around the paint area. I ended up just filling in the whole dot with paint afterwards which made for 3 larger cherry bombs and I really liked this look. With my other golo, I taped off the dots during blasting which kept the paint intact and the polished look around it too.

As far as who can do the work, I think any paint shop could... but, you might be able to find someone from this forum who has a blasting cabinet that isn't too far from you too. Nice way to meet other WRXers...

I've done 3 I think... here are 2 of them. Can't find any pics of my last one, but that's the one that I taped off the cherry dots...

kmac49,

What did you use to remove the sole plate screws before blasting?

I have a black GoLo 5 that I will blast once the finish starts to get crummy from gaming it.

Thanks,

- Josh

I don't remember what size, but I bought a set of Torx bits from Harbor Freight.

Sorry, the Torx bits were for the TeI3 inserts... Sole plate screws on the Golo are 1/16 allen wrenches I think. At least that is what I used.

No you were right the first time; TeI3's take 1/16" allen screws.

Definitely hex/allen, but they're a different size. Found this thread alluding to the same issue:

http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/1020143-i-need-new-scotty-cameron-plate-screws/

Verdict is they're 1/8"; Fastenal sells them (amongst others, but I hear McMaster-Carr doesn't ship across the pond):
