What is that UST-Mamiya thing right below his putting grip? I've never seen such a thing.

It's a frequency filtered putter shaft:

So all the guys in the off season are playing the new stuff just so their sponsors sell new editions?
I saw that Keegan switched to the new srixon irons, is that the reason?

I LOVE seeing bags like this owned by PGA Tour playing professionals. I mix of new & old but plays whatever gets the job done. Beat to heck Titleist 710 AP2's with KBS Tour Stiff shafts straight in but averages 175 mph ball speed with the driver on the PGA Tour. I mean if a WRX'er had 175 ball speed averages on the golf course with a high of nearly 180 mph ball speed (179.5) they would be playing C-Taper X double or triple hard stepped!!

So a beat up glued Burner Superfast 2.0 TP that's ~4 years old, 2 year old Stage 2 16.5 set around 15 degrees but a brand new 5 wood with a story behind it. AP2 irons that came out November 2009-- lead taped, soft shafts, beat up heads- we here would need the heads pulled and re-weighted inside the heads with lead powder. A Japanese one-off 3 iron style driving iron hybrid... so I think he's going from 3 iron to 5 iron. 4 Totally different wedges....

710 AP2 PW
ATV Original 50 degree (2-2.5 years old or so)
ATV TP 54 degree (newest wedge TM makes out right this second)
xFT TP 60 degree (shoot I'm not even sure-- 6-7 years old now? Hopefully he got a new face or 20 since he started using it.)

Odyssey DualForce Rossie II with a Frequency Filtered shat and IOmic grip-- pretty sure he said he's been using that putter since it came out like 20 years ago.... used it in High School I believe. I might be embellishing the 20 years but he's had it a LONG time.

I love it! Such a cool bag.

Still can NOT believe he's using standard KBS Tour Stiff iron shafts @120 grams when he can flat out bring it 180 mph with the driver... I mean he can swing it 120 mph with the big stick!! KBS Tour? Really? I love it-- everyone on WRX can learn a little from that. Feel is a big part of this game and just because certain shafts make sense on paper doesn't mean they will work in your hands. Speed does not always determine flex.... flight, feel, confidence, etc are just as important.

Awesome! Nice piece of writing.

But how mad will Palmer be if that club ends up breaking and the new stuff just doesn't feel right?

JW, it appears from the pics that only one (or presumably all) of his wedge shafts are KBS Tour 120 stiff. His AP2's most certainly have 130 x flex going by the shaft pic that follows them.

Damn! You are right-- on my phone the pics didn't look nearly as good. It looked like 120 S under his 8 iron but its definitely 130 X... and his wedges say WEDDGE. You're right-- eating crow.... my bad. I still love the bag though.

I actually own and game a R915* 3wood gamed by Ryan Palmer with that Accra XE80 shaft, he's been gaming that shaft for a while now. It's pretty cool to know he's found something better, it's definitely a nice set up. People really don't believe me when I tell them, hey this was actually gamed by Ryan Palmer, half don't even know who he is!!

Ryan Palmer is one of my favorite bags. Mix of old and new, lesson learned... if it ain't broke don't fix it. I liked Zak's article states that there are guys out there that even though a Driver set up gives them a couple more yards, they stick with what they know and what they are comfortable with. A bunch of lessons learned here. Mostly that it's ok to test the heck out of something. But if it ain't beating what you have in every aspect, why change?

Hey all: Nice article about Taylor Made testing and Ryan Palmer's 5wd. I knew that tour pro's are really finicky when it comes to getting there clubs just right ,but some really take it to the extreme. I have also noticed that it seems like the fairway wood is the hardest club for a tour pro to get just right so after finding one or two they like they are going to hold on to them for dear life it seems? Just goes to show you that new tech does help ,but it's not the be all and end all in terms of confidence and consistency. Thanks :golfer:
