EDITOR REVIEW - 2013 PING ANSER IRONS

Recommended Posts

I just don't agree about the look, i20 irons don't look too dissimilar to the old Anser and there are TONS of sets of those in play. Heck there were more G15 and G20 sets in play than the original Anser. Having been to PING and been around all of their tour staff they never push the players into a new product. They want to prove its better and go from there. They sent Mahan a set to his specs and he switched on his own with no influence... I know it came as a surprise to their staff.

can anyone speak to turf interaction, which is always high on my list of requirements for a new iron.. i'm a bit of a digger, coming from S3 Pros .. thanks

No issues with my set, just as good as AP2's through the turf. I'm definitely a picker when swinging well though.

Finally saw a set and they look really good. Didn't get a chance to hit them but I liked the fact that they DON"T have the iron # on the face. Why did PING do that to the I20's? I set the I20's down and all I can look at is the 6 on the toe.

no major issues for me - notice it in the 5-3 irons though... would prefer a smaller sole.

testing the rocketbladez tour right now - committed myself to X amount of rounds. the ansers are going straight back in after i complete the testing. the anser's are just sweet. i still wish i could modify the shape slightly. i originally asked ping to put a little relief on the trailing edge - off top of head can't remember the name of the grind, however it was unavailable with the anser due to the construction/materials.

love them. i may break my own rule and cut the rbt testing short!

Good to hear Swan.

They're unbelievably good... I sold my AP2s before these came in and I was kinda worried until I actually played a few holes with the Anser irons. They're just good in every single way for me.

Has anyone compared the 2013 ansers to the originals? Visually the stabilizing bars are obviously different. The lofts, lies, and lengths seem the same. Any difference in distance?

edit: I see a couple posts up above comparing the two... anyone done a head to head. Reason I ask is that I have a set of the original ansers and really like them. But am looking for a bit more distance, and more forgiveness would be great as well. Considering the X Hot Pros (primarily for distance) and the 2013 Ansers. But if these would make only a marginal difference I'm happy to stick with the 2010 ansers.

2013 Ansers look different (better IMO) that's for sure... What's the reason you're looking for more distance? If you enjoy your current Anser irons why not bend them strong?

I found the 2013 Anser forged much better overall and a bit longer than the originals, which didn't float my boat.

Enough longer that I'm having the lofts re-checked by Ping while they adjust the lies for me.

I had just hit the Anser two days ago for the first time and I will provide a very technical review. Here we go...Holy Mother of All Irons!!!! While I was awaiting a re-shaft I hit some of my favorites like the Adams XTD (really nice), AP2 714 (really nice), Ping S55 (really nice), Callaway Apex Pro (really nice), then enter the Anser... who knew? Upon hitting it I was giggling like a school girl going to prom. The feel was unbelievable, has to be one of, if not the easiest iron I've ever hit, and by far was the most fun to hit. Distance and dispersion were GREAT. All this combined with the fact that it had one of my favorite shafts in it, the Project X 6.0 goes down as my all time favorite iron. Had I hit these before buying my Apex I would have very likely worked the streets to pay the extra cost.

P.S. Before November I had no owned one ping club.

great review. For those who don't like the look compare them to how the ping eye2's looked. I suppose once you play them you could get over the thick top line after all. The eye2's also sold for around $170 -$185/club in Australia back in the day. Price comparative I think. Should note that so many pros these days moving to more forgiving clubs these days. AP1'S another example.
