Loft/spin relation

So I recently had to take my Titleist 680s out of the bag. I want to preface this by saying I have no access to Trackman or radar numbers, that's why I'm coming to you guys.

Right, I absolutely balloon these irons. They have Nippon 120s in them and I'm not interesting in changing shafts. These same shafts perform perfectly in my VRII blades. I hit them quite high, with a TON of spin that's a club shorter than my Nikes.

My question is, would delofting the 680s bring the spin down a noticeable amount? I know Adam Scott plays old school lofts because he says it gives him extra spin, but surely bending 1-2 degrees weak/strong can't affect spin enough can it? (I hope it can)

Can I just take 2 degrees of loft off my 680s? What effect would that have on the spin? I'm thinking I need to knock off around 300 RPMs and just don't see it happening.

I need new clubs

personally - i don't know how much spin you'd knock off by dropping the loft...maybe a touch? i think the major difference could come from a shaft change.

BTW - the 680's are my favorite irons in the history of irons.

300 RPMs of spin, depending on the number of the iron, is going to be pretty negligible.

With that being said, 1* will alter spin around 250 RPM at 100 MPH CHS. Less speed will equal less, higher will equal more. You can do the math from there on what you could expect to see.

Excellent answer.

To the OP. If you can see a visible ball flight issue i.e. the "ballooning" speak of, you will likely need to be altering the spin by significantly more than a few hundred rpm. At the risk of making a silly comment to a +1 handicap golfer, if you do just want to drop 300rpm is a ball change a reasonable option?

Are you losing distance due to "ballooning"? Hitting a high ball with lots of spin is a hallmark of good iron players. If your distance is coincident with your swingspeed, I don't see it as an issue.

Ok nvm. I re-read your post where you say it's a club shorter. Maybe that particular iron head isn't best suited for you then. Also you may want to double check your lofts on the titleist and make sure it's the same as your nikes.

300 rpm was simple an estimate pulled nearly out of thin air, as I said I am not a radar guy. I'm looking forward to warmer weather in Kansas to test out a firmer ball and lower lofts. Appreciate the replies, gentlemen.

I made a chart for Loft vs Spin rate, but club speed is part of it all

Seems like there is only 1 degree difference in standard lofts between the two sets. I doubt that this puts you over the edge on spin for the 680s. I'd look elsewhere, but then again I always wonder why people don't balloon their short irons if loft were the culprit.
