Callaway RAZR X Muscleback irons

Took these out to the range yesterday for a test drive. Doesn't help that I haven't played for 3 months, but they feel sooooooo good out of the middle of the club. I have the Titleist 712 AP2 (which are forged), but these Callaway RAZR X MB's feel so much softer, you can barely hear the click, very muted sound when struck well. Directional mishits seem about the same as AP2, as I expected, but I can't say about distance loss on mishits. Anyone want to chime in?

For some reason, I was hooking my short irons more with the AP2. Don't know why, plus the RAZR X MB's had DG S300, which were too heavy for me.

They are the best feeling and best looking set of irons I've ever played. For an MB they are very forgiving. Compared to my 2013 XForged I see no real difference in forgiveness and the 2013 XF are considered to be quite forgiving. Where these really shine though is their feel and turf interaction. I've been fortunate enough to be able to play numerous Mizuno's and Miura's and IMO these are superior in feel and overall performance.

Bonus is that they can still be found out there brand new for cheap.

These clubs are beauties.

OP, i have had the occasional horror miss out to the toe, and the ball will go nowhere, apart from that, I think they are nigh on the perfect club. I really dig the very solid feel, like the narrow sole but with bounce, the soft leading edge helps, and the smaller profile is very easy on the eye.

I actually own the model prior; X prototype four dot, with v grooves, which I think are identical to the Razr mb, bar the badging.

I'd be interest to know what wedges you guys are using, I have the original Callaway x forged fwiw.

Super forgiving, plus the sound and feel - I will agree with another poster from the Great White North - perhaps superior to Mizuno forged, dare I say.

I play a 5-P set (sometimes a 4 iron) and rotate it against my other, mostly range set of Mizuno MP-69. I seem to not feel the ball or ground at all with the Razr MB set, hence, it is my gamer most times. My only beef are the tightly spaced and more numerous grooves as compared to many other mb irons. Somewhat inconvenient for cleaning....

My set is now 3 yrs. old. Still looks nice. I may be thinking of prolonging their existence by adding a third mb iron to the party. I am seriously down to three:
Callaway Apex MB
Nike Vapor Pros
Cobra Fly-Z Pros MB (3/15?)

Some of it will be shaft up charge and availabilities between Recoils 110, Nippon Modus 3 120 S, maybe just KBS C-taper Lite. I am comfy in the 110-120g range.

BAG ONE:                                                                                                   BAG TWO:

H - Callaway Mav P (18) Titleist TS2 (21)                              H - TM SF 2.0 (18) & (21)

Well, if I miss it way off the toe, like close to off the face, even God or Jesus can't save you, because no club will.

I did try search for the X Protos and V grooves, but no soup for me. Best deal I could find were these, and even my set is a little dinged up. Maybe I was too hesitant to pull the trigger earlier.

On a side note, I still have the original Callaway X Forged and X Jaws wedges in the raw / vintage finish, they're nicely rusting away. Maybe when I wanna scare my opponents, that's a good time to use them (poser bag).

There were other sets on eBay in (possibly) better condition and around the same price, but I was hesitant to pull the trigger. Even my set is a little dinged up, but I guess nothing major.

These irons feel easier to hit than traditional muscleback irons, or true blades (Titleist 712 or 714 MB, Nike VR Pro, although I vaguely remember the Nike VR Pro's weren't that hard to hit tbh). Maybe its because of the X weighting system, that's why Cally's MB's have been easier to hit than most.

They look great; I need to try a set. The blade looks pretty long from heel to toe though. Anyone have a picture behind the ball?
Haven't got a pic but I can assure you they are a very compact head. I have the original protos and they are as compact as any smaller blade out there.

I love my set. I was going with Nike vapor to see if the moved towards the toe sweetspot would be better and nope. I came back to my Razr X MB. I have 6.5 Pxi shafts in them. The feel is perfect and the trajectory control is awesome. My set is +1* loft on irons from 5 all the way to pw.

A major toe hit will make you loose distance (5-8% for me) but not direction.

I have the quad dot also. I have never gotten a straight answer to what this means. Any help? Not trying to hijack. :)

I love the shapes of these. I just picked up a set of open box off global golf for the cavity back model for $340 with free shipping. Probably my favorite looking irons at address. Can't get over how my z745 look at address. I have decided to only play golf clubs I truly like to look at going forward. Plus I literally hit the Srixons too far for my liking...15 yard gaps on top of that. I personally feel more comfortable with more traditional lofts and distance.

I now understand why people play muscleback irons. When you really hit it out of the middle, they feel like no other forged CB clubs. Case in point, my RAZR X MB irons feel much softer than my AP2 712 irons when I pure it, they're going the same distance, maybe a touch longer with the MB. Often found myself pin high with well struck shots.

Ok, MB's will punish you when you mishit them, but I don't think the distance penalty is THAT big compared to a forged CB. Only reason I'm often 5-10 yards shorter is because these iron specs don't fit me yet, therefore mishitting them. Goes to show you how important custom fitting is.

Quad dots mean high bounce.

I've been playing a set for 4 years simply because I haven't found anything better. I've tried a lot of stuff, just nothing that combines feel, looks and performance as well as these. Smooth, workable, launch well, what's not to like. Plus the lofts are proper.

Anyone looking for info on the many different stamps:

The first heads that were introduced were stamped .R. in black paintfill to signify a standard weight, lie, bounce and square grooves. Some Tour issue ones and a lot of the ones introduced with V grooves are stamped ..R.. Mine are ..R.. V The quad dots as they are often referred to have higher bounce. The .R. heads have standard bounce. (2* on the 2, 6* on the six and so forth, following the specs of the Razr X MB.) The ..R.. have even higher bounce. I forget the exact measurement but it is at least a degree if not a little more on each club. Any sets that have the same number of dots on either side of the R started as standard bounce. Now if the paintfill is changed, that means they were retail heads which the lie had to be adjusted on. Callaway did an extremely limited production of these products and the amount of heads did not meet the demand so they had to take other heads and adjust them to spec for orders. The lie code is the following.

**R = 3UP and 2UP
*R = 1UP
*R* = Standard
R* = 1FL
R** = 2FL and 3FL

Color codes are as follows:
1UP = Green
2UP = White
3UP = Blue
STD = Black
1FL = Gold
2FL = Red
3FL = Yellow

Different head weights are signified by an L for lighter heads, H for heavy. I have seen them in black paintfill but also some heavy's in a reddish brown, maroon looking color.

Quad dot (high bounce) Tour Authentic X Prototype irons are the "original" RAZR X MB irons, but with the old U grooves?
