Wow! That 60* Vokey looks great. What grind do you call that and what would you charge me to do my SW and LW?They are forged Sonartec's and Im afraid Ill ruin them but would like a little more versatility as far as manipulating the club head.Is there a finish or something you spray or dip in order to keep from rusting?Im not a big fan of the "raw" wedges except for the reduced glare.I kinda dig the satin or tour chrome look even though you still get some glare.

Thanks very much!

It will rust on carbon steel materials. I don't do chrome refinishing as none out there will come out right IMO. Email me for quotation to [email protected]

THX!

I have a stupid question,

I want to lower the bounce so that the club will lie flat on the ground for those high soft flop shots. How do you know how much to grind and where to grind to get a 0 or negative bounce? At the heel, middle or toe? From your pics of the x tours and vokeys, it looks like you grinded the middle section of the wedge right?

thanks

Hi Joe,

I am new to this website (joined yesterday), and I want to grind my Taylormade TP wedges, but they are in the black finish. Is there a way get that black finish back, like torching it? Will it rust if I do grind it? If I do grind, will acetone take the rest of the finish off so I can I have one color on the whole wedge? Sorry for all the questions, but like many, I am very new to this.

Depends on your angle of attack, course condition, skill level, etc to judge how low you need to grind the bounce and which part of the bounce/sole.

Hello Joe

I appreciate your work and the fact that you are willing to share with us rookies. Any chance you can post a step by step on the P grind?

Thanks

Honestly, P grind need the right tooling and more on the advance skill level. Most P grind out there are pre cast or forged, that makes it a lot easier.

Ok, you’ve got my attention. I wanted to try this but now with this post it’s now a must. These are super pictures. Now I must decide the equipment to buy. I have a Craftsman Buffer (still in the box). It looks like all I have to do is purchase the belt sander attachment. Also the extended wheel looks like a must but as mention the RPM’s are critical. I’ll have to check my buffer to see if it’s a variable speed model. I’m a tinkerer and do my own clubs, I’m not in business. I have a small shop but it looks like it’s going to get bigger.

funny this is the first time i saw this topic but i did some amatuer grinding of a wedge last night just to see how it would come out. I just took a little out of the heel and took a little off of the fat flange of my vokey. looks pretty cool. not artistic like kwoks but seems to be functional...didnt notice a difference in weight so i dont think lead tape will be necessary. plus im planning on getting new wedges in the next few days so if i screwed it up this will be a short lived mistake!

Those are probably 15 years ago when i don't have all the right machine yet to invest. I'm even thinking of going to the next level investing a better machine. I found a few that are just amazing but still requires hand skill and good eyes. I really have to be honest, Artistic sense and technicallity on how to play it are very big in this wedge grinding or shaping IMO. Just grinding only is easy but grinds that works are not IMO!

That is one of the best descriptions that I have seen on what it takes to successfully grind a wedge. I have had several people ask me to grind their wedges to match the grind on mine and I ask them why they want it done, no good answers. I try and explain to them that I ground my wedge the way I did because it suits a specific shot that I play frequently, not because it looks cool. For those that I have done wedge grinds for, we will usually spend an hour or so on the short game area of my course so that I can see how they play different types of shots, then use a lie board to see the marks that are made and how heavily they are left. After that we will then discuss the reason for removing material from each spot and what it will allow them to do as well as what it may take away from them as far as playability. That is the part that a lot of people forget about, by taking off material, you can lose the ability to hit certain types of shots if you are not prepared for how it will change the way the club plays.

joe,

i was wondering if you have ever added tungsten weights to a wedge. i would like mine a bit heavier but don't want to add lead tape. how would i go about doing this?

thanks.

Comepletely off topic but Joe, I was wondering because u most likely want to grind the wedge sole without a shaft, so can i use a heat gun like for a driver of do i have to use a propane torch to remove the shaft from a wedge head? aND IS IT POSSIBLE TO GRIND A CLUB WITH A SHAFT STILL IN.

Anything possible, just make your job harder with less room work on and longer time to brake the epoxy.
