Ft Myers Country Club Rennovated

Recommended Posts

I have mixed feelings about the renovation done on this Donald Ross course. Originally built in 1917, the city did a full renovation complete with replacing every blade of grass that was previously on the course. The course is beautiful after the refit, however, some of the holes are a bit dicey. The tee boxes are not conventional tees as they used any area around the area where the signs are for the hole? On one hand, you can move the tees around and reduce the wear and tear on the ground. The greens are all elevated, false fronts and being a new course, nothing holds. The hole set up on the other hand, their are 5 sets of tees. If you play the white tees you are playing around 6000 yds .

White tees

1st hole 300 yds. at 210 there are two fairway bunkers in the middle of the fairway. Because the ground is so hard and rolls I have hit the ball green high a number of times.

2nd hole 380 yds straight away, but the yardage and how it was marked off has to be wrong, I have had 124 to the green a number of times and struck a good wedge only to come up a full club short

3rd hole 270 yds to the green, par 4, you have to wait for the green to clear before teeing off. There is a canal that bisects the tee area to the fairway,. If you can hit driver to the green it is a no brainer but if you cannot hit driver 200 in the air, you would have problems.

4th hole 175 yds good par 3 to a three tiered green

5th hole 336 yds Odd ball hole as you have a shot that goes 190 yds to the corner then a 90 degree right 120 more to a green that is elevated. Now if you are risk taker you can drive it over the trees and water hazards and get to the green. I have been 5 steps off this green a couple of times.

6th hole 376 yds slight dog leg to the right, nothing exotic about the hole.

7th hole 175 yds Straight away par 3 geen well up into the air and if you miss it you better be good with a lob wedge.

8th hole is 520 yds, canal that splits the fairway if you cannot hit a ball 230 in the air, you have to hit a lay up. the lay up shot the further you hit it, the more water comes into play on both sides.

9th hole, 400 yds dogleg to the left, difficult drivinghole.

No they were very generous with mulch all over the course and if you hit it in the mulch you can forget hitting the ball very far.

Backnine

10th 190 yd par 3, elevated green, miss the green right or left you are looking at bogey at best

11th 510 yds heavy bunkers from 100 yds in.

12th 165 yds par three, hazard immediate to the right and deep bunkering to the left

13th 345 yds Bunkers from 100 on in

14th hole 155 yds geen perched well in the air Heavy bunkering around the hole

15th hole 380 yds water all down the right, Green in the air

16th hole 410 yds, hit ball too far and you are in a water hazard, to far left, in the mulch

17th hole 288 yds to the green,

18th hole 540 yd par 4 You have to hit a drive over 240 in the air, second shot over a canal. Green well up into the air. A number of bunkers off the tee and around the green.

A number of decent players played from the blue tees and could not get a ball to stop on the green. all shot mid to upper 80's on a par 71 course. Same guys shoot in the mid 70s on the Eastwood course

Playing the white tees it seems short, but you still cannot score very well.

Mr Ross would be proud. Sounds like they found an architect who understands old time golf. Florida already leads the world in boring golf courses.

Knowledge of the Rules is part of the applied skill set which a player must use to play competitive golf.

supposedly they came up with a course rating of 73.5 from the tips for this course. Not sure how you do that with a course that has been open for 3 months
