Cleveland Reg. 588 Tour Action Special 49

Louis Lucas

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

My first post on gwrx, I bought this wedge about a year or two ago. I had asked friend of mine if he knew anything about this club, he gave very little to no information. I have tried looking it up online with really very little information. A few questions I have about this club are......

What does tour action mean?

What does special mean?

How do these play into its design and playability?

I do no that the 588 is very highly regarded.

If any of you are able to give me some info, I definitely would not mind if you also were able to tell about the year it was made etcc.

Thanks guys

Ahh yes, the original 588 Tour Action Raw Tour Grinds. Tour Action was the model, along with 588 (introduced originally in 1988).
The SP came at a time when there weren't typically aftermarket Pitching wedges offered.
The SP 49 has the following: SP Pitch: 49° loft, 5° bounce (I've seen some that also say 8° bounce).
These are very soft feeling clubs, particularly the RTG models (not chromed, so will rust).

I have a 47* in my bag. The original 588 Tour Grind and Raw Tour Grind wedges always seem to find their way back in to my bag. Picking up a 53 and 60 soon to fit in with my set hopefully.

I've played Tour Action 588's in 47, 51, 56, and 60 degrees since 2002. I don't see that changing until 2024 when the groove rule applies to amateurs like me.

I'm a bit new to golf been playing for 2 years, as far as the rules, what about these wedges are unlawful according to PGA. I have heard they are U grooved?? What do these type of grooves promote?
More Spin, Contrability etc....
Thanks

Larger grooves = more spin. The tour professionals were hitting out of the rough and still spinning the ball to a stop on the greens. It basically took accurate driving out of the equation. That's why they changed the groove rule.

as posted earlier yourtourcollection.com is the oly new source left guy there is Marc and he has some of these left in chrome with conforming grooves..... last of the bunch made for tour guys who refused to switch...once those are sold they are all gone.... best wedges ever made in my opinion.. I just had to switch and went vokey (kicking and screaming) ...but have a large collection of these.. they made the SP wedge in 45 47 49 degree and maybe 51..then 50 51 in normal 588 wedge... then the infamous and loved 53 diadic wedge with the dual sole grind...then a 54 56 57 degree sw and a 60 62 degree lobwedge... ive collected RTG chrome and gunblue in all of the lofts..... why? I don't know! I guess a loved them that much I wanted a lifetime supply..then guess what....The damn USGA changed the rule and now they are all paperweights as I cant use them in state am tournaments...therefore I don't want to practice with them.... I bought 2 sets of conforming grooved ones (same just added tour zip grooves for pga players) but ive worn the bottom grooves off the 53 and 56 of both sets... so had to bite the bullet and go sm5...

Pulled an old slightly used 588 60 degree from the basement as my chipping recently has sucked. Vokey and ping forged wedges haven’t been just awful for me lately.

The 588 is so good and just performed. Forgot how good these were. Actually considering putting the 588 back in the bag. Even considering trying to track down some like new 588s in 47, 52, and 56. Like new might be near impossible to find, but got to love the hunt amiright?
