Vokey SM5 removing black finish down to raw ( a how to pic heavy)

Looks great!

I'm thinking about doing this to my new TVD's in black ion. I just bought these and after just a couple rounds they look like they are a year old. I had sm4 TVD's before these and the old vokey black ox wears much better than the black ion IMO.

If I did this to my new TVD's would they seem to wear less than if I kept the black ion finish?? I am really thinking about doing this and not replacing paintfill. I've downloaded a few pics of my black ion tvds and the sm4 tvds to give you an idea of the difference. The blk ox on the sm4 tvds has worn over a couple years of use but the black ion really shows contact marks badly with only a couple rounds played. I know it's the nature of the beast but I'm just curious if doing step #1 will make them look better. Thanks guys.

Did my SM5's today, mainly with CLR. They turned out pretty well. I might try vinegar next time though, or have another go at these to get a slightly more even finish. The raw is great and, as much as I love the look of the black SM5's new, I think it will wear considerably better.

Those look great! Did the CLR leave the paint fill but remove the finish?

I'm actually in the process of removing the black oxide finish on my sm4 TVD using vinegar right now. Its working fabulously. I'd like to change the paint fill this weekend I think. Any tips ?
the best paint fill I have used is the duplicolor paint pens you can find them at your local auto store. Easy to control his much paint gives in to the stamping with out getting air bubbles

Now that they are raw, have they started to get some rust?

I've always dunked my oil can wedges in coke to strip the finish and BAM, they rust right up. Especially here in SWFL summers. Hoping the black raw finish acts the same.
yeah once you remove that finish they are back to raw steel and rust up.

Thanks for this! I had some CLR lying around so decided to strip my SM5s thanks to yet another snowstorm and they turned out nicely if I say so myself!

I have always loved playing the raw brushed finish on the Tour Issue Vokeys and with all the new grind possibilities I figured I would save some money over ordering a thousand dollars in wedges from wedge works. I ordered a set of Vokey SM5 with the black finish built to my specs and went to work. ( this only works on black oxide and oil can finishes) I am not responsible for any damage to clubs, personal property or injury of person following these instructions.
You will need:
Patience : It took approx 4 hours to get the results I did.
Scotch brite pads
Klean strip paint stripper ( works way better than acetone make sure you use it outside and don't get any on your skin) if you don't want to remove the paint fill skip this step.
2- 2 liter bottles of Coke a Cola or naval jelly
Q tips and tooth picks to remove paint from corners
Acetone to clean up any scuffs on the ferrules from the scotch brite
Old tooth brush for really getting in to the lettering
Steps:
1. (Outside) open the stripper and put gloves and eye protection on. Using a Q tip fill the painted areas with stripper gel and let sit until you see paint start to bubble and peel. Clean paint out of lettering may take a coupe applications. Rinse with warm water and brush letters with an old tooth brush to get all the paint out
2. Give the heads a good once over with a fresh scotch brite pad and soak the wedges in Coke for 30 minutes. (When you go over the faces keep the pressure light)
3. Remove from coke and rinse them off and go over them again with the scotch brite pad. I did this process 4 times total as the black finish was tough to remove. Oil can finish should only take one or 2 baths in the coke to completely strip the finish
4. Final step go over them with the scotch brite pad use straight strokes with the pad or you will get a swirled finish on the metal. Clean up ferrules with acetone and a smooth cloth. Don't rub too hard the acetone eats the plastic.

The process does not remove metal so the weight of the heads and swing weight of the club are not impacted. Wedges were a D5 swing weight when I started and still were when I finished.

Hope you enjoy the how to. This process will void the warranty if that matters to you. I'm sorry for the couple of upside down pics.

Yes, paint fill won't be effected. I am actually redoing the paint fill on mine separately. Will post pics when complete.

Thanks for sharing, question what role the coke a cola have? glad i don't drink soda.

coca cola removes the oil can and black ox finishes.

Use CLR instead. Coke works, but takes 12+ hours and leaves a sticky residue. CLR takes minutes and leaves nothing behind. Only reason to use Coke is if you drink a lot of it so you have it on hand and you're too lazy/cheap to go to the hardware store and get something that works way better.

I did my Vokey's twice.

First time it took a lot of the finish off, but not all of it (see pics earlier in this thread). The second time I soaked them in CLR overnight, though you probably don't need to do it that long. 2 - 3 hours should do the trick. They didn't look great when they came out - very blotchy and uneven - but after going over them thoroughly with a heavy duty Scotch Brite they came up trumps.

I re-did the paintfil this weekend and it looked naff so, I stripped them again and am sticking with the raw version with no paintfill. I like the industrial look!

My Vokey oil can is sitting in a glass of CLR right now.

I like the raw/satin look of the wedges in this thread. I'm hoping mine will look the same.

I've gone to new irons this year --- TM MC and really like the looks of them finish-wise. I was using three Vokey oil can wedges last year (pw, 56 and 60 and occasionally swapping in a 52) and just yesterday I found a nearly new used TM Tp 58 wedge for $50 at Golftown so out goes the Vokey 60.

I wasn't planning on using the Vokey pw this year (will use he pw that came with the set). I had the oil can 52 bent to 54 --- as opposed to buying a 54 since it was barely used last year and since it doesn't match I'm hoping the CLR will give it the same satin/raw finish as my irons and wedges.

The oil can finish was wearing off anyways....

Can you do this with the gold nickel?

Has anyone used a dremmel wheel instead of a scotchbrite pad? If so, which one did you use?
