Is ther any empirical data on dimple superiority/inferiority on such?

This topic could get messy fast. I would start with a reference to another thread on ball flight (http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/1096945-what-makes-the-ball-spin/) for some background on SOME of the science behind ball flight. Beyond that, I am not sure anyone has really done a full and complete study outside of confidential data from each company and their own studies on other company balls. We have spin numbers for balls listed on this site, but nothing that would really be "complete" data as far as the differences in laminar air flow or other factors based on each type of dimple/spacing/pattern/etc.

If there is any such data, the ball manufacturers are not sharing it.

One generality is that deeper dimples tend to fly lower, while shallower dimples will fly a bit higher. Lots of variables go into the design of a golf ball.

That's very true. Deeper dimples=more air going in to them and having to come out (higher spin, higher launch) shallow dimples= less air resistance. Golf ball companies are very hesitant to share the truth about how their products stand up to others. You'd be surprised to know who owns the majority of golf ball patents!

I would guess either Wilson (from being in the ball business for so long) or Callaway (since they bought all the patents from Top Flite).

Bridgestone actually. It makes perfect sense when you think of it. They're the largest rubber company in the world and bought Precept a long while back. The original Pro-V1 core was being made based on a patent that Bridgestone had. Bridgestone sued them and got a great settlement. Last I heard they still use a few of Bridgestone's patents for the cores of their products.
