Where should our golf trip be this year?

Recommended Posts

My dad and I I usually meet up somewhere in the country once a year and have a week of golf. We plan it around being able to catch a Phillies game. This year the choice s are:

Milwaukee in August

Denver in May ( weather a factor?)

Atlanta in July or September

Chicago in July

Arizona in August ( hot )

Baltimore in June.

I figured all the wrxers would know best. I was also wondering looking for some must play courses. Thanks.

Yes they do play this year, but we have done that already. He just moved to NM from Lancaster MA. We have been trying to go play in places we haven't golfer or seen the Phillies play yet. Thank you for the info anyways. Those golf courses near Boston are some of my favorites.

Hard to pass up Denver, lots of great golf with the added benefit of altitude. Weather in May shouldn't be an issue (in the rare case of snow - and growing up there it does snow in May, it melts off by the afternoon). More likely to have 70-80 degrees and sun.

As for courses - a few worth checking out on the web:

Fossil Trace, Golf Club At Bear Dance, Ridge at Castle Pines North

Full disclosure - grew up in CO but lived in the Philly area (West Chester) for 12 years. Miss some of the courses in that area.

Thanks for the info. I grew up in south Jersey but now live just north of Pittsburgh and golf is really fun out here minus the off months during the winter. I have a bad case of cabin fever right now. I have a vacation to Puerto Rico the end of February so I plan to get a round in down there.

If you were to choose the Milwaukee/August option be aware that the PGA Championship is being played at Whistling Straits August 10-16. Whistling is often considered a "must do" along with Erin Hills (home of the 2017 US Open), but you could find yourself shut down.

If you've never been to Wrigley then I would HIGHLY recommend Chicago. It's just an awesome ball park and terrific place to watch a game. Bars in Wrigleyville are fun too. Always a good time going to a Cubs game.
Chicago golf is no slouch either. Some terrific tracks around Chicago / suburbs. Just google "best golf courses in Chicago" and all kinds come up. Cog Hill has 4 courses but I highly recommend #2 and #4. And Cantigny is probably my personal favorite as far as public courses are concerned. Great golf and great conditioning.

Can't help you on golf there because I did not play but go see the Phils at Wrigley. Few years ago I got my dad tickets for Phils at Wrigley for Christmas. Got 2nd row behind their dugout for pretty inexpensive compared to what we pay for seats in Philly. They played a 2 game series so I got tix for the 2nd game and plane tickets to arrive on the day of the first game. You never know whether it will be a day or night game at Wrigley when you buy tickets before the season starts. When we got there we walked to Wriglyville and walked right up to ticket booth and get tickets for thats night game behind home plate.

As a Phillies fan it was an awesome experience for me to be at Wrigley. I know both me and my dad really loved it. Added bonus that Doc shoved for 8 innings the game we sat behind the dugout.

If you aren't worried about the heat in August I would fly in to Ft Myers and stay/play in Naples. You get some really fantastic deals on tee times that time of year and several of the courses are fabulous. While you're down there make sure you get your /\$$ kicked by Old Corkscrew - if you go in humble and know the course is going to win it's actually a fun time) twisted I know.

I did it last year with my Dad and brother and we stayed down on Marco Island and played:

Tiburon
Twin Eagles
Hammock Bay
Old Corkscrew

It was a lot of fun and the greens fees were such a great value for what you get - really nice out there.

Shoot - I just reread and now I realize that you want the Phillies too. I'll leave the suggestion anyway for others but I know it isn't what you're looking for. Sorry.

Seeing a game at wriey would be pretty awesome but damn is Chicago brutal in July with the heat and humidity, and this is coming from a native to Arizona, so I am familiar with heat. I just found golf in July in Chicago to be oppressive, the humidity made it hard to play in the afternoon, I had 5 gloves and couldn't keep em dry.

AZ is going to be hot, but play early and stay hydrated and it's much easier to handle. And the golf will be so cheap, you can play the best tracks here for between $25-70 and those are the ones that are gouging everyone for $200+ right now. Mid tier tracks can be had for well under $30, with many places being $15 with cart for nice places. But it's gonna be hot lol
