Going to cancun....Where do i play ?

Recommended Posts

Leaving in a few weeks and wanted to book some tee times for my group. Just wondering if there any " WOW " courses there and what courses

to stay away from .

Also any bang for your buck courses however we dont mind paying for the ultimate golf course either .

Ive played some of the nicest courses in the US besides pebble beach ( Wolf creek, indian wells, Plantation kapalua to name a few ) so its tough to really wow myself these days but i dont want to be miserable either from crappy tee boxes or greens.

Thanks.

We went the week before X-mas and got 4 rounds in.

First round was at Moon Palace, fun course but I played like garbage. The most recommended course in the area and the busiest. 2nd round was a Riviera Cancun, highly recommend it. Set in the middle of mangroves it's a good layout where you will hit every club in your bag. Conditions are excellent for the most part. 3rd round was at Mayakoba, where they play the PGA tour. Very nice course. 4th was at Iberostar Cancun...stay away. Completely forgettable and a butt load of gators and crocs (actually hit one and had another hiss at me.)

Now some things I would expect, don't compare them to the greatest courses because they're not. They are very fun courses but don't hold up to the greats. I would strongly advise against walking, they have LOTS of space between holes.

That said the service you get at Moon Palace will be second to none. The service at all courses was better than anything I've seen. When they say all inclusive, they mean all inclusive. Transportation to and from, range balls, cart snacks, drinks during and post round.

Enjoy, the golfing is fun and relaxing but be prepared because if you're wild off the tee the ball is gone.

I was just there a couple of weeks ago. I only played Iberostar Cancun, it was an easy course other than the par 3s...lots of iguanas and gators. All inclusive for sure just bring lots of tip money! The other course we played was Puerto Cancun....this was a longer and tougher track that winds through the mangroves so if you have an off day off the tee prepare to loose some balls, and was a more interesting layout, but did not include food and drinks like Iberostar. Both courses in excellent condition no complaints there.

I thought Moon Palace was ridiculously overpriced. Yes, it was a decent track, but for the steep price, it was a poor value.

I actually liked Iberostar. The wildlife was a nice bonus.

We got the all inclusive for $65 twilight and played 20 holes, but full price is ridiculous.

Played many courses in the Mayan.... I really liked the Iberostar, good mix of holes, cool wildlife and course was empty which was awesome. Mayakoba was nice, but bring your wallet it ain't cheap. Friend of mine is the Director of Golf at Grand Coral...course is not well known but course was excellent and would definitely recommend.... Glen is the director tell him Scott from Woodensticks recommended it :)

If you like tight fairways, Playacar is decent but nothing great. Not the best course for the winter swing.

It's vacation golf, enjoy it for what it is not the best courses in the world but have a few Corona's and hit them well.

I was there a year ago. Played Grand Coral and Iberostar. No one would put em the money to play else where.

Iberostar was okay. Kinda gimicky at times.

Grand Coral is a nice course but I would say it's not what you would expect from a course in Cancun. Meaning if I blind folded you and drove you there (past the cartell of course) and dropped you off on the 4th hole and said go play.... you would never think you were in Mexico. I would say go play it as the value for it is there. Nice range as well.

I'd probably skip Iberostar if I had to do it again. My favorite thing about golf in Cancun was getting cab drivers. It always boggled my mind that the guy would stay the entire time for my 5 hour round. Meaning he would drop me off, I'd warm up, play 18, and that dude was still there waiting to take me home!

I've played moon palace several times. Like stated before, it's a very different experience from golf in the states. The course is carved out of dense Mexican forest so you won't play a lot of creative shots because if you miss the fairway, your ball is gone. Overall, beautiful course, decent amount of wildlife, and they have 3 9's so there is some variety. If you stay at moon palace they typically give resort credit you can use or the twilight rates are usually a pretty good deal.

Oh and the practice facilities are solid and the restaurants at the clubhouse are fantastic.. My favorite on the resort
